League last night, nothing was working. First two games were awful, so in the final game I just used my XXXL and throw it straight. Scored 213 and managed to get a draw in the match.
When you’re having one of those nights where nothing is working, as a last resort, do you resolve to ‘throwing it straight’?
I didn’t enjoy it but thought I had to do something to rescue some points.

I've never gone that far, but you gotta go with what works. If you shot 213 throwing it straight, that shows you were trying. I take defeatist to mean you give up.
I had a friend in college, if he was struggling to get to the pocket, he would move way left and line up to hit brooklyn. He figured he would either strike or at least leave makeable spares.

during a small stepladder tourney one day i did. during qualifying i had no line really, my spares saved me, nothing i tried worked. so i plugged away with my T-zone straight at the head pin, at an angle. i ended up finishing 4th out of 25.

You just tried to find a way to score. Nothing wrong with that. A couple weeks ago I couldn't carry on the left lane. I ended up shooting my first dutch 200. I was frustrated, so for the 3rd game I threw a back-up ball on that lane. I tossed a 4-bagger on that lane like that too, but of course I then lost the right lane

I've done the same thing in a Sport league when I had nothing on the right but the lefties had it wide open. I also ticked off some people in the process, but you do what you gotta do.

It's not how pretty, it's how many. That's why we keep score.

So lets say you're bowling in a tournie where you can't get to the pocket and you are leaving washouts and garbage. Is it okay to then throw the ball straight up the middle trying to get a little break left or right from the head pin?
I mean the goal of bowling is to score the best you can, so if that's the way you can do it, would that be ethical?

You did what you had to do to score. You didn't cheat, you didn't whine or complain. You tried everything you knew to find something. When that failed, you did what you needed to do.
Absolutely nothing wrong with that. I can actually applaud you for sucking up your pride and finding a way to score. A lot of guys won't do that.

This was before I got a spare ball, but quite a few years back I was on a league at one of the local places and the lanes were bone dry one night. No matter what I tried, I couldn't keep the ball on the right side so finally I said screw it, moved a bit right and started throwing brooklyn's on purpose. Ended up with a small 600 doing that.....

You guys have made some very good points, thanks!
I’ve been working hard to improve my game (even though my score hasn’t increased much) that’s why I feel bad ‘throwing it straight’.
Thanks for the comments!

High score wins!
What else is there?
There are certain nights when our pre-conceived ideas about how the lanes will play are obviously wrong. It's commendable whenever you "think outside the box" and find a different way to score.

That's what you did and it worked, congrats.

a simple straighter game can be as good, if not better, than throwing a big bender. you want proof ? walter ray williams, jr., and norm duke. there's all the proof you need.

On brutal conditions, I line up brooklyn and throw rockets. It works pretty well for me!

I think that there's always a shot there for the "normal" style hook bowler. That said, you shouldn't beat yourself up trying to find it. If you can bowl straight and it's effective then go for it and take the pins.
I would say that it's worth giving it a few minutes thought afterwards and work out how you could have played the lane differently. The reason being that you can learn for next time.

Yes, it’s admitting that I don’t have the necessary skills to beat the pattern and have to resolve to ‘throwing straight and hard’. It’s ok though, I’m still learning the game!
Thanks for the comment.

way to go
I learn that last summer in a tourney.
everybody balls hooking off the lane except left side 2 bowlers.
I told the manager I got 5- $150 balls for $750 nobody can shoot 200.
last game I used my spare ball for last game go front 6 pocket 7-10
off the sheet for a 266 game now don't that frost something.
at my house in league sometimes when they are bad I used to thing that
I can't throw a spare ball I do know and shoot 200 often.

Very, very true...A simple straighter game carries better, IMO. But I think some league players around by me don't work on their release because they say "straighter is better". In their minds, their weak, off the side release is "good enough" because WRW and Duke "go straight" But WRW and Duke CAN hook it, they CAN play in, but they manipulate their hands TO go straight. I cringe when some juniors are not learning the art of staying underneath and behind the ball with a full fingered lift and turn. They are satisfied with a bad off the side or suitcase delivery because "straighter is greater". IMO, every junior should learn the power release first, and dial it DOWN accordingly.

oops, and to get back on topic, my teammate has been switching to plastic in game 3, because he just can't take the lack of oil anywhere on the lane. It's working.
