Speed Differential
« on: December 17, 2015, 08:41:48 AM »
I am currently over rev'd for my speed.

We got speed monitors this year in a house I bowl at.

I throw plastic at corner pin spares. I don't try to throw hard than normal but just let the plastic straighten out the ball.

My ball speed with the plastic is around 16 mph and my ball speed with my strike ball is around 13.5 mph. Right now my most used strike ball is a punch out.

I understand that the more a ball hooks the longer it takes to go thru the speed trap and reads a slower speed plus a higher friction ball will bleed off speed as it goes down the lane.

But most others I watch the differential in speed is 1.5 to 2 mph, not 2.5.

Is 2.5 mph drop off more than normal?

I don't hook the ball a lot and try to play oil line to keep the ball from over reacting.

My strike ball speed is 17-18 mph on screen. I throw Plastic for spares. For makeable conversions, my spare ball is around 17-18 mph. When I throw at splits or a spare that needs a bounce, my speed is 20 mph.

My speeds are measured on Qubica scoring systems.

My speed varies more depending on where I play on the lanes....slightly inside the track area I will see 1 to 1/12 mpg faster than playing outside or in the track.....friction slows the ball down does it not?

It has been several years since I did a CATS analysis, but when I did my strike ball was registering about 17.3 at the arrows and around 13 on the back end.  I was registering sub 300 rev rate but also had a low axis rotation so I wasn't hooking the ball a ton.

On Qubica at home I was typically between 14 and 15 for strike balls, and around 17 on spare shots at 10 pin.  2.5 or more differential is not a lot if you are really hooking the lane.   I also notice a big  difference between pairs on my speed sometimes.  On CATS my speed control was excellent.  Not sure the speed sensors are always calibrated right in commercial centers.

This is a Qubica system as well.

About ten years ago I did the CATS at Reno. They had me 17 in the heads and about 15.3 at the pins and was measured at 300 RPM.

In the last 5 years I have lost ball speed for a variety of reasons.

If I line up to really bank it off the dry my speed will drop into the upper 12's to low 13's.

If it helps any, with Qubica,
my normal strike ball is around 13 - 13.5 at the backend.
My normal spare is around 14.5 - 15.0.
If I need to be precise, my spare ball speed will go down; If I'm throwing harder to convert wide open spares like the 7-10, it will go up.

2.5 mph difference seems unusually high.

I don't think it's too unusual. I'm right around 14.8-15.3 and then up to 17.5-18 on throwing spares to the right with my Pitch Black

You guys are getting old. It's crazy to think some of us have been here for 10 years +/- a year or so....

BUT, You OG's still can take our side action money, pretending your back hurts, or hand stiff from holding the bourbon glass tightly that morning....

One day I'll be there.... I used to roll 17-18 down the lane and 18-19 for all my spares.. I lost 1.5 - 2 mph in the last two or three years...
