3rd game tournament ball for a down and in player.
« on: August 05, 2014, 11:55:44 AM »
I know the importance of being able to adjust and move inside when the pattern breaks down, but I would like to stick with my A game as long as possible.
What ball and drill do you down and in players use when the lane drys out? Also what type of ball and drill do you use to move inside a bit and keep carrying the corner pin? I know this post is very generic so if you have some basic information on how any of you do this it will be helpful. thanks

A weaker ball with a tame layout, I'm assuming you're talking about bowling on a house shot.

There's too many variables.

I know there are a lot of variables. Just looking for a couple of quick opinions of the top of your head. I was using a ebonite cyclone drilled with the pin next to and even with the fingers with the cg stacked below. the ball is in box condition very shinny. It worked fine playing between 5 and 10 the first game on a modified house shot (bourbon street). 250 plus the first game, 230 plus the second game. when you say weaker ball what do you have in mind, urethane or another reactive?

If you're shooting 230-250 the first 2 games, you shouldn't need much helpwise. You should really just look at making some small adjustments

I like to play down an in, and do it well.  However, as you probably understand it always becomes necessary to move in as lanes transition.  First, more important than what ball to use, is how to make the move.  Too many guys just want to move their feet in without bringing their target in as well.  You still have to play more out angle, but you don't start standing left and throwing right like a power player.  If I move in to 15 board at the arrows, my break point will seldom be outside of 8 or 9 board.  If I get to 20 board, my break point will be inside 10 board.  I simply don't have enough rev rate to cover a bunch of boards and still have energy left at the pocket.

Turning to the ball,  I like strong low rg pearls when I get deep, sometimes I will even throw a strong solid without much surface.  The mistake people make is trying to go weaker when they move in.  When I am going down and in outside 10 board I will use my smoothest rolling ball tame ball, especially on a house shot.  As I move in, I want something that will save energy, but make a strong change of direction down lane to compensate for less entry angle.   The only time I go weaker inside is after I have gotten as deep as possible, and I simply cant get anything stronger through the heads.

Also, a lot depends on the length of the oil pattern.  On shorter patterns I will find ways to play further out, and stay out with the tame balls.  On longer patterns I usually go to the strong pearl right away.   I will play relatively direct looking for some early hold area , until the track starts to open up.  Then I often don't need to make a ball change as I move in.

Thanks SVstar34 I always reflect on what adjustment that I should have made. I should have come around the ball more to delay the hook. I made to big of a jump right with a strong solid. That was some good advice avabob. I prefer weak bowling balls with control drills so that I can stay left also. Your game sounds like mine only I'm from the left side. What strong pearl do you use and how is it drilled?

You didn't mention you're a lefty at first, that changes things.
If you want a ball to move inside with and have recovery, the Legacy if you want to stick with Ebonite or you could even drill another Cyclone.

Sorry I should have mentioned being a lefty in the original post.  Cyclone's are cheap right now that why I boufht one, a little hifher pin could work. Avabob what's the name of that strong pearl that you use. Thanks for the commets.

Right now I am using Marvel Pearl.  Pretty sure the Optimus would also be a good one.  I am picking up a Black Widow Legend which I also expect to use when I move in on some patterns.    If you like asymetricals, there are lots of good ones.
