Title: Thumb irritation
Post by: Geigs on March 01, 2018, 03:16:58 PM
Burn mark on front of thumb towards tip under skin. Black mark on nail tip, back of thumb. Even cracked nail awhile back. Feels like nail is dragging upon exit of thumb from thumbhole during release. No pressure, stress on fingers, only thumb. Specs, span-4 5/16, thumb-15/16 oval switchgrip with 1/8 fwd 0 lateral. Fingers 1/8 rev both, using vise powerlift grips. Was thinking of going 1/16 more rev in thumb to finish at 1/16 fwd, and going 1/8 more fwd with fing to finish at 0. Hoping this will put more pressure to fingers and not thumb. Any thoughts, help is appreciated.

Only change one thing at a time, so you know what works and what doesn't.

1/16 isn't enough, from your description you should probably try moving 1/4 to 1/8 reverse in the thumb, but it's impossible to tell without seeing your hand in the ball.

Thanks for the response. I would be worried going that much reverse in thumb. I use to be 1/16 rev in thumb and zero in fing with a slightly longer span and felt I was always struggling with losing ball on downswing. So a few years back we went relaxed grip with more fwd pitch thumb and rev in fing.  Worked gd for a few years but now I’m getting thumb pain. Maybe I lost some flexibility in my thumb now though. Just turned 50. Yikes. Now that I think back, I never had thumb issues with reverse in thumb years ago, just had problems losing ball on downswing. Anyone had black burn mark on thumbnail, and possibly cracked nail like me? Should you pitch toward the irritation.? Any advise will be helpful. One note, i’m a wood finisher by trade even though I have strong hands, I have extreme dry skin because of all the chemicals i use. Lacquer thinners etc. which dry out my skin. I always feel like I struggle to hang on to the ball.

For a burn mark on my nail I opened up the thumb hole around 4-5 o,clock. After that,I was good.  That remedy could be masking a fitting issue, but it worked for me.
