What happens when bowling isn't fun anymore?
« on: June 04, 2004, 10:05:00 AM »
I posted this on another internet bowling forum so this is a direct C&P of my original post.

The title pretty much sums up this post. After a really frustrating season of collegebowling, injuries, and timing issues, I've been working really hard with numerous coaches and respected top amatuers and PBA'ers to fix all of these problems. The thing is, just when I get it all right, I really don't care anymore. I'm bowling two summer leagues on the Great Wall of China with a bunch of old folks and house bowlers with completely horrible mechanics who can average 220 on this stuff and think they're great. Meanwhile, I'm struggling just to keep focus and keep my heart in the game because bowling on conditions like this(throw right with your eyes closed and flush the hole for 9 or better) and not really learning anything really has me beyond bored with the game. I'd rather just stay working at the pro shop and drill people balls all day. At least that's fun and I learn something new everyday and I have fun doing it, unlike bowling. Has anyone ever just gotten to the point in bowling where you just aren't learning anything and it's not fun anymore? What does it take to get that "drive" back? I for one can't wait for the new season to start up. Maybe it will all change then.

any suggestions?

Go play golf. You'll get so frustrated at that, you'll beg to get back on the lanes.

DP3 - Invent ways to make it more chalenging.  You already know that you can bowl on a wall but can you play and score competitively with a line that is very tight?

If you know the break point of the lanes play inside of it on a very tight line and use the right equipment so if you hit the walled area you will go split or cross over. This forces you to concentrate harder because you have very little margin for error.  This will also make you better playing other conditions when there is no wall.

Thanks for all the advice and kind words so far.  What I was trying to get at is how bored I am in such a non-competitive environment.  I really wish I didn't joined the leagues and spent my summer bowling scratch tournaments and such but now that I got pulled into these leagues by some bowlers I can at least try to make the best of it while I'm here.  It was such a long night last night and working two jobs(not counting the pro shop) without any off days, I was in burnout mode going into my leagues this past week.  I think what I'll do week to week just to keep myself interested is to use one ball every week(I have way too many as it is).  Go into league week in and week out with one ball, no spareball, and my shoes only and keep track of every shot on paper just to test my limits.  I appreciate all the comments though.

Agreed... you either need a challenge.... or maybe a break! Take the summer off. Get some golf clubs out and play a few rounds. You'll appreciate bowling more. The good thing about bowling is that you'll rarely loose any balls!

Seriously, it's easy to get burned out. Sometimes a break will recharge the energyand drive for the game.

I'm of the opposite opinion.  When I really don't want to bowl is when I really need to bowl for some reason.  There are times when I make myself practice.  Keeps the game from becoming rusty and  the mental aspects from becoming out of whack.  There are tons of things to do during this time and allows for some experimentation and trying of new things. New equipment and game changes can happen right now.
