Week 3: Pba League.....Shark!

Pba League
Week 3
Resurfaced Wood Lanes
Shark Pattern

I found this pattern to be very challenging. 10 and out was out of bounds unless you threw it super turtle slow. The backends weren't as stripped as it usually is. My best shot was playing 12 to 8 or even 13 to 10 using a Banger Hole Pounder Solid. I was using soft speed with some side tilt and layed it down very early so it could start rolling early. The ball went down nicely and made a decent arc into the pocket. First two games i go clean shooting 237 and 245. End of game 2 the lanes started to change. From watching the Chris Barnes and Wes Mallot video i can understand what they were talking about. The backends started to look tighter when really i think the heads started to burn up a little. I wasn't getting the movement and ball reaction i was earlier. So i started moving left a little and got an ok reaction on the left lane but on the right i was stuck. I was getting over and under. If i got left a little i left the bucket and if i move right i leave a high 4 pin or 4-7. I switched to a 4000 abralon Black Solid Widow and it was the same. Plus i might of been getting a touch firm with my speed. I chopped a 2-4-5-7 but the rest were marks. I finished with a 184. So overall i shot a 666. He ehe. I think i should of got softer and had more tilt pus move inside a little playing 16 or 17 to 13.

I bowled with Ramtart and he used his Hammer Hawgzilla, Brunswick Impulse Zone, Storm Vertigo and Roto Spare. His best look was with the Vertigo. He was able to go away with the ball but he had to be firm and come around the ball a little. It was an adventure out there. Our league puts out the pattern 2 weeks in a row so Ramtart and I will get another shot next week at it.

Any advice to how to play this pattern better? What were your experiences?

Strider has just said the difference for most people in these leagues, Spare shooting. If you are able to stay out of trouble and and leave spares you can make and do convert them, thats the key to averaging 200+.

I agree, leaving single pin spares instead of multipin ones would help increase one's average.  Funny thing is that I am pretty good at spare shooting but currently my mechanics are not so good, and bowling once a week doesn't help improve it.

My PBA Experience league has the Shark pattern coming up this next Monday.  The house reserves two pair of lanes Tuesday through Friday for league members to practice on the upcoming pattern, we get 3 free games a day.  Since I missed the Shark pattern during the first rotation, I figured I would take advantage of the practice. I've come to realize, especially on this pattern, every pattern plays a lot tighter than described in the handouts.  I consider myself on the high end of the tweener category listed in the handouts.  But I am almost always having to play straighter than the recommended starting point for the straight players.
Example: On the Shark, I was throwing a RG Battle, sanded to 500.  I was standing 17 and throwing up 10 at the arrows.  And I mean straight up 10, if I hit 9 the ball might catch the head pin.
The house has 1 year old Brunswick lane beds.  Is this the major reason that the shots play so different than expected?
Exp. league is like a long par 5, stay in play, lay up and take the spare.

I hear ya!  I haven't exactly whacked the patterns, 182 ave for 6 weeks.  The only pattern that I whacked was the Viper, 886 for 4 games.  Although, I had to shoot 280 the last game to do it, love that Mystic.  I guess on the tough shots you just grind it out until the door opens up for a big game.  The league is worth it just for the spare shooting lessons.

Wow, I didn't know my thread would go this long. Thanks for all the reply guys.
It helps gives another prospective of how the lanes play for each of us. I totally agree every house is different because of the lane topography. Equipment and being versatile is key to scoring on these PBA patterns. Or should i say helps. Over all it's challenging and very fun. It can be frustrating but a great learning experience. I can't wait til next week.

We've bowled on all 5 patterns once now and I have a 184 average.  I struggled on the Chameleon (decision error), did pretty well on the Viper, Cheetah and Shark, and struggled on the Scorpion.  Big games are possible on these patterns if you match up right, what separates the "men from the boys" is how to make adjustments when the lanes break down.  Most of the big games I've seen have been bowled in the league where when the bowler's natural style matched up to the lane condition.  For example, I shot 882 (4 games) on the Cheetah pattern because I was able to play out near the gutter (breakpoint @ 2 or 3 board) when no one else on the pair dared go out that far.  As a result, the lanes didn't break down  out there and I could set up camp most of the night.  I have medium to high ball speed (16-19, depending on the lanes) which matches up well to the Cheetah.  On most of the other patterns, I don't think playing on the fresh has been a problem in our house, the challenge has been dealing with the transition and what the other bowlers on the pair are doing to the lanes.  I think you have to know who's bowling on the pair and what angle they're playing to anticipate how the lanes are going to break down so that you make the proper adjustment decision. (chase the oil left or soften hand/more speed & loft, etc.)

I tried to play in on the Shark with a 4000 grit Thunderstruck and realized that the surface in this center is really crappy in the middle. If you rolled it to slow the ball would hook high. If you gave it a little speed it would actually get to the pocket but when you leave 5's, 7's and 10's (sometimes together) you have to realize it may be time to move. First week 165 avg.

The second week on this pattern I decided to play straight up 15 with all the hand I have. Sit right on the edge of the crappy middle and let the ball (Thunderstruck) do the work. Really inconsistent for the first two games but still averaging 179 because I can make spares and some splits. The final game I decided to try a Robo Rule that I drilled that day in the same area and the reaction got better. During the game I remembered that Norm Duke actually won playing out on the Shark so I decided to try it. Finished the game with a 5 bagger playing 3 board at the arrows. Second week 186 avg.

The third week I come in with the mind set I left with in week 2 playing 3 at the arrows with a decent amount of revs and slow roll. The Robo Rule was so smooth and strong down the lane that it carried every light hit. I made every single pin spare and 2 splits. Had a great night. Third week 222 avg.

I'm loving the experience so much that I'm looking for another house (with better lanes and machine) to bowl this league in the winter.

So far after bowling on all 5 patterns one time (the first time I've bowled a PBA experience league) I'm averaging 192.4. My low set was on Cheetah last week (533) and my high set has been on Scorpion (625). On Shark I shot 611, I found I had to play the lanes a little like Norm Duke did at the Columbia 300 Classic last December, I stayed away from big splits, made my spares and kept the ball in play. The shorter patterns seem to be giving me a little more trouble than the longer patterns. Spare shooting has been decent- staying away from splits has been the key I think to keeping my average in the 190's.

I'm loving my experience, can't wait to see what my second time around on these patterns will be like.

I bowled my first games since coming off hernia surgery in April and, wouldn't you know, it was on the Shark pattern!!  Well, let's just say that my first round of golf last week was WAY better than my first night of bowling!!  All I had on me was pearl stuff - Paradigm, FiredUp and a Hot Rod SSP.  I had some success playing 25 to about 17, but kept missing my angle and going out to about 12.  VERY BAD!!  We bowl 2 games, move, then 2 more games.  On the first pair, my spare ball would wiggle to the right at the back, so I had to use my strike ball to hold the line on my spares.  On the next pair, my strike ball would grab and not get to where I was throwing, so I had to throw my plastic.  On the 2nd pair my feet were on 25, through 17 at the arrows with a little belly.  All that being said, I'd say my 127, 158, 136, 135 = 556 (139 avg) was just AWESOME!!  Today I feel like a truck ran over me, but it was good to be back!!

The shark has been my favorite of the 3 patterns we have bowled so far.  3 Weeks I have shot 599, 678, 678 on a Pro Anvil Surface.  I was only averaging about 180 on the cheetah and viper patterns going into the shark pattern.  I have started out standing around 25 shooting at the third arrow with a Special Agent and moving left from there.  The biggest problems I had was when I got far enough left I couldn't recover and moving back right hooked too early.  I think some peoples averages are higher than expected, because for the most part you bowl 3 games and are done.  PBA tournaments they are bowling at least 7 games at a time and I imagine the longer you go the more difficult the adjustments.

Pba League
Week 4
Resurfaced Wood Lanes
Shark Pattern

This week was very frustrating because the lanes looked tighter than last week. I tried to use a 500 grit Special Agent and 1000 grit Solid Hole Pounder up the track. Both balls just reved and stayed straight. I think what got me was my speed. Lately i've been throwing hard and straight naturally. Slowing down my speed has been tough. Even though i had aggressive balls with surface i could had no room for error. I tried to play anywhere from 15 to 12 which went down and came up light or got flat 10's. I moved out slight and got light hits. I moved into 16 to 18 out to 15 or 12 and it slid. I came to a conclusion at the end of the night that i should of tried a ball with less surface because the ball could of really been burning up as it went down the lane. Next time i will try. I shot 180-230-178 for 588. Yuck. Oh well. Tonight i think our league is bowling on the Scorpion pattern. I will let you all know how it goes tomorrow.
