Time to simplify
« on: March 07, 2018, 08:30:17 AM »
At the advice of a former PBA champ with 20+ TV appearances, its time to shrink up the arsenal to 5 or 6 and be finished with it.  Take no more than 3 to league and 6 to tourneys, which I already do.

He says lose all the asymmetric stuff, keep a few symmetric solids, a few symmetric pearls and 1 urethane.  I agree.  It's time to face the facts .. if you can't get it done with 6 balls on any shot, you can't get it done period.  Bowing is recreation for me and I want it to stay that way.... simple is more fun.

I see so many guys nowdays come into the local recreational house china with 6 balls and they just confuse themselves. I have been guilty of that years ago also. ...... NO MORE.  My average is up 15 pins since "dumbing" everything down a few years ago and I bowl at a competitive pace in my local challenge league.

I need to get even simpler - thinking the 6 ball arsenal will be:

Marvel-S
Marvel Pearl
SONiQ
iQ Tour Solid
Punch Out
Pitch Black

What do you think?  Has anyone else had a desire to this?

Probably the best advice you could get.

I actually have... Kinda. Been rethinking lots of stuff and granted, it's not 6, but I've tried to simplify.

Here's my plan.

Freight Train
Dream On
Covert Ops x 2
Honey Badger
X
Boost hybrid
Shadow Ops

If I didn't love the Break weightblock so much, I could work it down to 5.

Strong symmetrical, strong assym, then ball down from there. I don't consider the HB a assym because .008. X is going to fit well between the HB and Boost.

Do you use similar layouts and let cover/core differentiate? I once gave up on asymmetricals as well but now use them.. Thanks  ;)

I only take 3 balls total to league, and one of the three is my spare ball. It helps me keep thins simple, there were times when I used to be the guy with 5 or 6 with me at league every week, just caused me to second guess everything.

I don't necessarily agree on the asym/sym part, but to each his own. I just bring a fairly strong ball, and a fairly weak ball to give a different shape, as most of the my stuff looks the same on a house pattern regardless.

I've got a ton of equipment, and my arsenal could be classified as a lot more than 6, but I can't remember the last time I traveled with more than 6 for a tournament.

I like asymmetric cores too much to abandon them.  ;D

But yeah, that's about right. It's as big as my (drilled) arsenal gets and anything more is a pain to haul around. One of the biggest things to watch out for is managing overlap.

I keep 2 drillings in the bag, for the most part. 50*5*65 and 60*5*35, but I'm planning on one of the Covers Ops to be 45*4*30 and keep the cover at 1000 to shape up a bit different than the oob 50*5*65

Reason? Because I like the ball motion too much to not drill 2.

On a house shot, you should by able to consistently find a shot to the pocket with any ball in your bag.  If you can't do that, you don't need another ball, you need to work on your game.  Given that you are at s place where you can hit the pocket consistently, bit then gets down to carry.  I have often said that when my carry is good, I can carry with two or three different balls.  When my carry is bad, I could drill out everything in the pro shop and not carry.  The single biggest attribute in ball reaction is not cover or core.  It is your release

I totally agree. Getting the right shape through the pins is the key. House shot, find the friction, go to town. At the house I'll probably end up bowling league at, I will probably take a Drift and Covert.

BINGO!!!  Good release = 5 inch pocket.  Bad release = 1 inch pocket
In the bag:  900 Global Zen, Hy Road Pearl, Astro Physix.

For a THS and a challenge league, you're pretty well covered. If you're doing anything more extensive (PBA Regionals, Masters, and US Open type events), you're probably limiting yourself too much.

In those situations, I'm not talking about taking more equipment with you, but to have more to choose from to take with you. I have both the Marvel-S and the Marvel Pearl, and if those were my two most aggressive pieces, I would have needlessly handicapped myself in several  tournaments.

I'm not sure why your guy says no asymmetrics. They can provide a different hook shape which is a critical option to have. Otherwise, I like how you're thinking.

Ive kinda went the same route, ditch Asym's and go to strictly Syms. I still keep 6-8 in the arsenal at all times, but really only take med-weak stuff to leagues and my avg has gone up dramatically. Some days i feel like i want to try something different and bring others to league and just have fun. Got some Quantum's coming today and drill tomorrow so i should have fun on Thursday league. We will see.

Not sure there is a right answer between symetrics and asyms.  I have bowled well with both, and bowled bad with both.  I recently switched out a no rules pearl for a Marvel Pearl, and an Alpha Crux for a Phase 2.
I have had real good luck since making that change, but I dont rule out  adding an asymmetric.  Previously I did very well with a lucid

Quantums are fun balls for sure.  Hy-Road ended up beating them out for league but they are a blast and well worth where they are priced now.  As for asyms have a few but other than my Honey Badger none of them are that exciting but then again almost exclusively on THS.
