laying a ball out by the center.....
« on: December 20, 2010, 05:35:40 AM »
Just curious as to what you guys take into effect when laying a ball out for a customer that just bowls at one house and maybe 1-2 leagues there. Do you take into effect the layout by looking at the lane from side to side or front to back...or both.....and of course the specs. (pap, tilt, rotation, speed, etc...)? We have many "drillers" here that just look at side to side, because everyone wants to "hook it alot"...In my experience, I can get more out of the ball by choosing a layout by looking at the lane from front to back....IMHO. Just want some general discussion here and what you guys do.

Thanks for the time and comment/opinions!

I am not a ball driller, but around here many non-educated bowlers "receive" strong label layouts. It hooks a lot, even with a crappy release, and the ball driller is on the safe side because this layout is a no-brainer concerning static weights.

I would not recommend it, though, because I do not think that it is a layout that is useful for someone who learns a better release or wants a certain reaction - I found that some players who started this way had their ball become much too strong over time, burning up or hooking too much and too early.

I can say that I drill mostly for higher level players, but I have tried to steer all of them towards front to back motions more than side to side.  In my area there are more flat patterns than typical house blocks and side to side is useless on forty feet of flat oil.  Controlling the breakpoint has become my biggest priority when drilling a ball for anyone.
