Skin Tear
« on: June 27, 2017, 10:41:13 AM »
Anyone else tear the skin off on the pad under your index finger? I think from heavy use of my rosin bag that pad area is grabbing on the ball hard in my release and tearing the skin after 3-4 games.

I have tried tape, new skin and about everything else.  I went to the Turbo Rev.  Cant bowl without it.

Turbo Rev works well or you can use an insert which is much cheaper.  When I didn't use inserts I ripped the callous off of my middle finger.  Had to super glue it back on to continue bowling.

Something I have used on the knots of my bowling fingers because with extended games bowled on a given day or few day time period the skin would tear/break apart from the friction is Marathon liquid skin protectant. It is rather pricey but my skin hasn't ripped/torn or even bled since using it maybe 5 years ago. works better than liquid skin protector, but it is more money for sure...I have gotten some good deals on ebay for this stuff.

Could it be that the span is too long, putting too much pressure on your index pad.
(Ripping the skin off is downright creepy. All that blood must make it hard to hold onto the ball. :) )

Some good suggestions here.  If your middle finger is your dominant finger, (mine is too), your span may indeed be too long, or there may be too much angle, you might just relax the pitch in your middle finger only just a tad and see how that works.  Sounds like your finger is just really hard against that edge and especially if you use grips, that repeated friction will get you.  Adding some reverse pitch may be the quickest and most "non invasive" change you could make.  The thing that sucks about adjusting fit is that you change feel at the same time, and quite frequently you can end up with worse feel out of a ball that technically fits better.  Trying this change first may fix the fit without screwing with your feel.

Pretty sure he's talking about the base of his finger, where the ball rests on his palm.  A Revs is for the wrong end of the finger than his problem.

Put a piece of protecting tape over it.  It's not a fit problem.

Ah, yeah, wouldn't be a fit problem then.  Tape will be fine.

OK. So can you be a little clearer as to what part of the finger you are talking about?
I thought it was the pad at the end of your finger, the part that goes into the hole. Or do you mean the pad at the base of the finger where the finger meets the palm??

Apologies, it's the base more palm area where the ball rests. 1/8 inch under the bottom crease of my index finger. Almost like I'm using that spot to get more on the ball. I might just have weak skin. I do work in IT so not much skin conditioning lol.

Developing a callous at the base of the index finger is usually considered one of the few places it's okay to have one.

Most likely the skin is just dry cracking, Start using some moisturizer to soften the skin back up.

A option to help protect that area is a bowling glove and provide extra grip:

Then we were all wrong until itsallaboutme.
Just put some tape over that area to protect it.
