Hey all,
for years i tucked my pinky and it never bothered me unless the lanes broke down and then i started to realize it helped to untuck it when the lanes were dryer and this year both places I bowl have a very difficult shot where if you hit it to much you can over react alot. It have taken me almost 6 weeks to come to realize that i need to untuck my pinky for good, i did this Saturday and i really started to have my ball not over react. Have any of you had this problem and what things did you do to stop it? Thank you!

I never did do the tuck but noticed other bowlers who did. I never realized what it did for the ball until I read Ron C's tip on Finger Dancing, then I played with it a bit. Sounds like you learned something valuable on how/when to use it. For others, here is a link to the Finger Dancing tip:

Getting my span to fit correctly was a great help in stopping a 25-year habit of tucking the pinky. As it turned out, my span was more than 1/4 inch too long. A relaxed fit that let the ball rest more in the palm of my hand gave me more of a feel of "holding" the ball which I would previously generate with that tucked pinky (pushing the ball harder onto the fingers)
Ron's tips that Mi2Az mentions are worth viewing.

i've always tucked my pinky... did it ever since i was a little bugger. Now when i try to straighten it, i always feel like the ball is going to fall off to the left (holding the ball up). I can adjust my release enough through moving my pointer finger and wrist movement and staying behind the ball and coming out the side that i really dont worry too much about it being too much of a problem.

I used to tuck my pinky when I was younger, but during college it over stressed my ring finger tendon so badly that I couldn't bowl for 2-3 months while it healed. Ever since I have not tucked and wouldn't try it again. I do however keep my pinky resting against my ring finger now while bowling.

I did have my span checked but this is somehting i have done since i was about 15. I feel i am adding more to my game by learning to not tuck it and then when i need that extra rip i can tuck it. Thank you for all your comments.

I also tuck my pinky when throwing for a strike, and for most spares. When shooting for the 6, 9, or 10 pins I always untuck as it lets me get more of a straighter/controlled line. Like shepp, when the lanes do start to break down, I always attempt either untucking my pinky or shifting my index finger closer to the middle finger. Both help me take a little less hook off the ball, while keeping my normal release.

just to let you know. First full night of not tucking it and only had three opens all because of learning how the spare ball will move. Shot 640 and i was tired from trying to throw the ball hard and I only used one ball all night. thank you all for your support!
