Cold weather ?
« on: November 16, 2005, 07:41:58 PM »
does cold weather effect your game?

Im trying to work out what went wrong this week.

Last wednesday, i got a 668 series, this monday, got a 490, then wednesday got a 431.

I couldnt hit my mark 80% of the time, so after adjusting for the bad throwing, then I hit the mark...

The clear difference between this week and last, was its a lot colder in the alley, i mean, i was wearing a glove on my other hand to keep it warm.

Would the cold effect the oil/lane/balls, or just me/my swing?

the cold weather can effect your game and equipment. do not leave your bowling balls in the car during the winter months. extreme temperatures are hard on the materials the ball is made of---they'll also hook less. your hand/fingers/thumb may also shrink slightly due to the colder weather. you may need to add tape to your thumbhole. you may need to change the size of your finger grips. the lanes at the bowling alley may hook less as well. as the ground under the lane beds gets colder the oil won't dry up/move as much.

Weather and climate do a lot of things to my game. In summertime, my thumb swells due to sweat and humidity, and ball traction is much better due to the higher temperatures.

In wintertime, I usually have to take stronger balls for the same occasion, and my fingers are "smaller" and somewhat stiffer, my movements "jerky", especially when coming out of the cold and at the start of playing. A good warm-up routine is a must, but it takes about 1 full game for me to get really warm and relaxed enough to play well.

Balls will generally have less friction when they cool down, so, never leave your equipment in the car trunk when it is wintertime. Could also lead to cover cracks and core separation when you throw a dead cold ball down the lane.
That's why I transport my bag in wintertime always in the passenger compartment, close to the radiator (what makes Storm balls give away their fragrance... hmmm, apple-cinnamon )

I agree with Mojo.  It might be something as simple as adding another piece or two of tape to your thumbhole.  If the ball is falling off your hand, or your gripping the life out of it so you don't drop it, there is no way your going to make good shots consistently.  The lower humidity will help the oil stick around a little better, but is a relatively minor factor, in my opinion.
