Last league I was in , was a freeze league.. Basically they giive you a freeze ball, and thats the only ball you can use in the league.. It was a nice way to get a free ball at least.. But now We have a summer sport league where they use the same pattern as the USBC nationals that were in Reno this year..  This is going to be my first league ever shooting a sport pattern and want to know what to expect.. We cannot have any practice , nor do I know what the layout looks like , so I'll be amazed if I actually avg 140 :(

Whats in my bag is in my sig below.. I dont have a true heavy oil  ball, but nor do I no if I even need one, but anything you guys and girls can suggest for tonight would be helpful :)

I believe the patterns in the USBC sports leagues can range from 33 to 47 feet. The balls you list seem to match up to short and medium length patterns. You may want to get something a bit stronger for the long patterns. But the most important thing is to stay positive and try to learn.

Yea it's tough to judge when I don't know the length or pattern and we can't even practice. :/

Oh well it will at least be a good learning experience from the THS I've come to love for the last 25 years lol.  Last year in the freeze league ended up with a 190 avg over 50 games after being out of the game for about 10 years.   I wish I could have that luck  on sport shots :)

If I read the OP correctly, they are just using the Reno pattern from this year's nationals.  Look at the correct forum and you should find plenty of posts where people describe their experiences.  You can also read about the tournament in the link I provided.

Click the Information tab then more info.

Pins: AMF Amflight II
Lane machines: Kegel Lane Walker
Conditioner: Kegel Infinity
Cleaner: Kegel Defense-C (mixed 4:1)

The pattern this year is 41 feet in length and applies 27.35 mils of conditioner per lane.

The lanes will be oiled before the 7 a.m. doubles and singles squad and again before each team event (2:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.). *Because of varying squad sizes, there is no guarantee that all lanes will be bowled on during each squad.

*Note: Our lane machines incorporate transfer brush technology with a "drop brush" feature. The pattern numbers can be loaded into transfer roller machines as is.

For proprietors with transfer brush machines, please contact Kegel for "drop brush" software upgrades.

Sorry. I didn't even see there was a separate section for the usbc Reno pattern.

I'm sure it's not the exact same but I know our house just got a new kegel machine and the manager was at the nationals this year.

All he said was it was the same pattern as the Reno usbc championships

So what does this mean.  How is this different from the avg house shot? More oil overall? More in the middle, more on the outside, longer?. Etc

The number one difference between a sport pattern and your regular ol' house pattern is how FLAT the sport pattern is from left to right. You don't have extra friction toward the gutter, and you don't have extra oil in the middle of the lane. If you miss target left, the ball is going left. Period. If you miss right, the ball isn't going to hook back. You have a very, very small margin for error.

Thanks Dan... I did noticed something like that last yr... I didnt bowl on the league, but I did practice on the sport pattern last year after their leagues were finished..  So its flat, great, lol putting my accuracy to the test after not bowling one game for about 11 months...

I did like the cluster of oil in the middle for those shots I rolled off funny on, and it would just slide down the middle, and when I had it to far outside it would grab and come back ( on the THS )  ugh.. I guess the first game will be practice.. Ill be throwing the Freeze which is more down and in, while my DB is much more gradual, and predictable of a roll..  TO me, it seems like a polished ( Freeze in my case ) would be dangerous as where the DB, although its a heavier oil ball, would be a bit more gradual and I might not hit the headpins dead on, like I think I would.. What I wouldnt give for a slingshot right now

Exactly why the only league I bowl in the summer is a sport league.

well Just got home.. 2 things really killed me..

1) I practiced 5 games 2 hrs before the start of the sport league ( I had to , It was my first time bowling since last June )  Which blistered my middle finger so half way thru the first game of leagues it was popped and burning like a SOB

2) I practiced on the THS shot, which in out house is 43'
-- The USBC pattern we play on from nationals is 41' and is very tough to find a good line, especially with 5 other bowlers  on the lane..

So after the first game which is what it took to find my marks and what ball to use, I started slowing down my approach and ball speed and keeping the revs up .. I ended up using the freeze, as it was much more predictable and stronger in the backend

Ended up Shooting a 158-199-197 .. But I think I got it now , and we'll go for broke next week... VERY tough pattern, as I missed simple spares because of the stronger backend and me not really knowing how things were gonna react

I am also doing a PBA league this summer, and our house has told us they will put the same shot we will be bowling on, out first thing Sunday morning, on two lanes, so we can come in and practice.
Not sure if this is an option for you, but might be worth asking about at your bowling center.
So far we have only thrown on the scorpion for the first 3 weeks.
