Title: Twister Pins
Post by: Strapper_Squared on November 05, 2003, 08:44:51 PM
Hey everyone.  One of our local houses just upgraded to new Twister pins.  The house is an older one with wooden lanes.  Even with the old, beat up, and dead wooden pins, carry was exceptional.  About four weeks ago, all the pins in the entire house were replaced with brand new Twisters.  These are supposed to be more lively and have increased carry.  I have found it to be 180 derees from the truth.  I have never seen worse carry anywhere.  In the four weeks they have been in play, I have lost 20 pins in average.  Over that period have have averaged 15 to 20 stone nine counts per set.  Its been a little hard to swallow!  I have attempted just about every line to the pins that the lane conditions have allowed without much success (outside of 5 to as far deep as 20 or so).  Best success seems to be playing the track area... although this burns up by the end of the first game (unless you are lefty).

Has anyone had success with these?  Where did you find the best line/carry to occur?  Any suggestions?

The only time I bowled with Twister's was at the Stadium in Reno at the ABC's in 2001.  I don't remember much about the carry since it was my first ABC tournament, and I was having more problems with the shot than anything.  I have heard they do usually carry less than typical pins, though.  If anyone has any information, I would also be curious if they are still being used in Reno, and will be in use at next year's ABC's also.

Some of the same issues that come with new pins of regular construction are still going to exist with Twister pins.  Also, factor in what weight was ordered- you could be bowling with heavier pins, which sometimes are not so forgiving to the masses.

I've bowled one league with them, and left a number of 9-pins.  The center ordered 3lb10oz pins and they were new for the summer.

Last time I was at the Stadium, they still had the Twisters, so I'd expect they'd be there for the ABC next year.

- Have you tried a 3-piece (or more technically, > 2-piece) ball?

By "swish zone" are you referring to the light, mixing shot?  I seem to leave an incredible amount of 7 pins with that shot...  believe I left 4 in a row (adjusting a little each time) before I finally moved enough to leave something else (think then it was a 10...).

The condition is a longer (38-40 ft) heavy oil christmas tree pattern with mild backends.  Initially you are limited to fairly aggressive equipment to get to the pocket with any sort of drive.  I have thrown a number of different balls the past few weeks with about the same success:
Cherry Bomb
Thing
TPC Player
Icon 300

Twisters were in use at the Stadium for the National Mixed Championships last month, so I figure they'll probably be there for ABC Nationals, too. We have one house in Albuquerque that uses them, and they do not take me to my happy place.

Twister pins and short oil. A bad combination.

Strapper which house is it?? I would assume Bellefonte, or
Northland.
They have the twisters at Selingsgrove
and I carry very well with them there.
I like to hit em a tad light.
the oil is not light there and the backends are
not screaming, not do I have a ton of area to hit.
About 3 boards is it.

if any of you saw the abc masters last year you'll remember that the light hits really carried----but like bob hanson stated the pins do seem to fly around at odd angles and directions. the stone solid hits seemed to leave taps. pba senoir of the year bob glass seemed to think the carry was similar to wood pins( he does throw a power ball though ).

Twister Returns as Official Pin of 2004 ABC Tournament

August 13, 2003

The American Bowling Congress has announced that the Twister pin will return as the official bowling pin of the ABC Championships Tournament. Manufactured by Artemis Rubber Technologies, the Twister pin is the only all-plastic synthetic pin certified by ABC.

As part of the agreement, Artemis Rubber Technologies and Twister pin distributor Lane DynamX will be granted on-site promotional consideration throughout the 2004 ABC Tournament. The 101st ABC Tournament will be conducted Feb. 14-June 26 at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev.

The Twister pin made its debut as the Tournament's official pin in 2001 when the Tournament was last held in Reno. Prior to that it was used in the 2000 ABC Zone Challenge satellite tournament that was held in conjunction with the ABC Tournament in Albuquerque, N.M.

Twister pins will also be provided for the 2004 ABC Masters which will be conducted at the National Bowling Stadium Jan. 21-25. The Masters high qualifier is the recipient of the Arnold Jaeger High Qualifier Award, named after the pin's creator.

“We are proud of the way the Twister pin performed in 2001,” said Jaeger, Artemis Rubber Technologies founder. “You can’t find a better bowling environment than the ABC Tournament. The Twister pin will once again prove its performance and durability.”

“We’ll use two rotations of pins,” said Ed Baur, ABC Group Executive of Tournaments, Communications and Marketing. “In ABC Tournaments where we use wooden pins we elect to change pins every two weeks to keep ‘fresh wood’ on the lanes. With the Twister pin we found that we don’t have to follow that practice.”

As the world's largest participatory sporting event, the ABC Tournament has provided manufacturers with a showcase for historic technological advancement. AMF automatic pinsetters were demonstrated at the 1957 ABC in Fort Worth, Texas and Brunswick synthetic lanes were showcased in Louisville, Ky., in 1980.

More than 80,000 bowlers are expected to compete in the 2004 ABC Tournament in team, doubles and singles competition for an estimated prize fund of $6 million.

I might have missed itin this thread, but they talked about pin problems on SUndays telecast. As with all new pins, wood included. you have a flatter base on the bottom, so they stand better than old ones do, therefor you leave more standing after a shot. It makes sense to me that  the pin is going to have momentum once it falls because it absorbs more energy to make it fall.

Just an opinion

As per usual the ABC testing of the Twister pins, from what I read, was less than stellar. They were approved, in spite of or because of (depending on your point of view), their carry percentage in bowling leagues was within statistical averages of other brands of pins. That is, (in my interpretation), for the average handicap league bowler, their carry percenatge was neither greater nor less than any other pin.

This is kind of a skewed way of looking at it, from the better bowler's point of view (most people here would fall into that category, from what I have seen).

I think that solid pocket hits will not carry as well as light hits, because, as many people have already mentioned, Twisters tend to leave the ball much more quickly than plastic coated wood pins.

I shot against them at Reno, like thegame did. My carry on light hits was very high. My carry of solid hits was terrible; did leave several bizarre splits. I am glad I do not bowl against them in league.

I practice occasionally at a house that has them. I've found that the light
pocket hits carry better than the flush pocket hits.

I have a friend who's a righty and when we were in Reno for the 2001 ABC he kept leaving 7-9s with those Twisters

As for me.... 4-9s

Yeah... seems to be agreed...  hit them just light enough to scatter and rely on the pin action to carry the others...  Scores are probably going to be lower, take it in stride...  I guess worrying about them make you too "outcome-based".  Instead I'll have to look at it as a good opportunity to practice spares.  Consider it practice for nationals... and who knows, if my carry continues to be terrible, I may actually get some handicap at tournaments

A couple of guys were in the locker room after bowling team event in Reno. They were wondering what the new Twister pins would be like to bowl with. One of their team mates informed them that they had just bowled with them. Of course they did not want to believe it because they could not tell the difference.

I would guess that 99% of today's bowlers would never know if some one does not informed them!

I would echo what others have said about the Twisters and the last trip to Reno. The one thing that stands out in my mind about those 9 games is every time I had a solid pocket hit I left a 9 pin or some split combination involving the 9. High flush was a 4-9 almost every time. Tried different angles, but made no difference. I am hoping with the different equipment and knowledge of playing deeper angles that I will have better results next June.
