Title: Undercover Boss 10/9/2020
Post by: Bowler19525 on October 05, 2020, 12:39:26 PM
For anyone interested, this Friday's episode of Undercover Boss on CBS will feature PBA CEO Colie Edison as she works undercover at Bowlero.  Might be a fun episode?

I would hope she traveled to IL where there are like 6 Bowlero’s within a 35 mile radius. Would be nice to see her hit all of them on the show if she did and not just one.

I think a even bigger question isn't just where she went to record these, but WHEN she recorded these.

What I mean is that if they were recorded this year, the final product for what we see may be skewed because of COVID. If they were recorded during last season (before January 2020), then both we and she would get a good view as to what they truly do there. Seeing a time when leagues and entertainment are already reduced and places are shutting down because of COVID won't give anyone really any insight into what truly goes on when a house is packed; leagues, open bowling, tournaments, or otherwise.

BL.

I thought I read that these were recorded early in the spring, before all the shutdowns started happening.

She was on Beef & Barnzy today.   Show was filmed over a two week period starting last October 1, the Bowlero sites were identified as Connecticut, New Jersey and Atlanta.  Beef & Barnzy actually showed her in costume for one of her visits..........should be fun to watch.  We all identify what is wrong in our local centers, nice to see what others have to deal with.

These shows are all heavily produced and the "real" employees that appear on them are extensively interviewed prior to being selected to appear on the show and the employees that appear are straight out of central casting, the great employee that gets rewarded, the hard luck employee given the bonus, etc. And if a new employee suddenly showed up at work and was followed around by a camera crew you wouldn't think something was up? Pass.

Most "reality" shows are far from being spontaneous or "reality".  Survivor, American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, The Voice, Big Brother, Bachelor/Bachelorette, 90 Day Fiance, Married at First Sight, all that stuff.  The producers stack those shows with a cast that they feel will be entertaining, guide the show in the direction they want it to go, and the producers "compel" the cast to act in the way they want them to in order to elicit specific responses.  There is a reason that reality shows hire writers.  If it was a true reality show, there would be no writers needed.

Some of these types of shows are still kind of entertaining.  Colie Edison herself is kind of an interesting character herself having started as a cast member on a "reality" show and worked her way up to CEO of a professional sports organization and CCO of the largest bowling center owner in the world.

I'm not telling you not to watch it, watch it all you want. But pay attention to the end credits where they list a credit for "writer".

MJS73--do tell who the 'writer' is--I'm not going to watch, but would like to know.  Thanks

According to IMDB the writer credit goes to Stephen Lambert.  Do you really go around saying things like "do tell"?

LOL--I just 'noticed' that.  Not usually, I think I'm a little old for that.  Not sure where it came from earlier.

I worked for AMF for 25 years as a head mechanic and in the good ole days we maintained from the foul to the pit, we followed a pretty darn good pm program and machines were taken care of correctly, and the amount of labor hours was enough to keep the machines decent.
The company changed hands several times and soon it was nothing more than squeezing everything out of the centers and no reinvest or upkeep, this is when most centers became run down and mechanical operations became awful.
then came along bowlmor, I watched my paid holidays go away, no reviews or raises for 5 years, vacation denials because you had no mechanics to cover, heathcare become a joke, no budget for parts, buildings falling apart, I could go on for hours.
I had to make the choice to get out of the bowling business and do what was best for me and my family.
I have never met Colie and maybe things are better now, but the tv show was a 180 to what I witnessed as an employee

If she is “chief customer officer” or whatever that means, and is really that out of touch with the day to day operations of a bowling center then she has pictures of somebody with a lampshade in their ass.

Most corporate executives are so far removed and so far out of touch it’s comical. Really a shame.

A friend of mine was head lane mechanic at a Bowlero up until recently and his issues were a lot of what you described. His biggest gripe was with the vacation denials and being called into work on nights that he was bowling league at a different house (the GM knew this when she hired him). Then when the center re-opened after covid they only gave him part time hours. He finally got fed up and quit to go work at an independent house.

Was cool to watch.  The center in Atlanta (actually Norcross) was one of my home houses when i lived there.  That center was one of the Brunswick World Team Challenge sites as well as a PBA Tour stop back when Tommy Jones won with The One and the same center Walter Ray picked up the big 4 during another telecast.  I have known Jody Glenn and his family a long time.  Super cool man.  Watching him shoot his first 300 about 10 years ago was awesome.  Man was in tears from all the emotion.  He had bowled almost 40 years when it happened.  Crazy at how different that place looked inside after Bowlero took over.

From what I have seen, Bowlmor saved Manteca Family Bowl. The original owners were great while the "old man" was still alive, but once "mama" was in charge, she nickled-and-dimed the place util it was run down.

Then the son took over for a while and the situation improved greatly, until mama had enough of him spending money, then it started sliding again.

So they finally sold it to another local operator, who made a big show in the beginning, then either ran out of money or discovered it was beyond their ability to operate. It became a dirty, poorly maintained dump. One example as a hole in the exterior wall that stayed for about 2 years.

Bowlmor(bowlero) bought it and everyone assumed the worst, but they have constantly poured money into the place and today, at least before covid, it's very nice! The maintenance is better, the lanes were replaced and it seems to have a lot more business.

It must depend on the local management for how well a Bowlmor house runs or they evaluate a house and decide that it doesn't have a decent future and milk it for what profit they can get or that it's worth a capital investment to make a decent profit in the future.

As all TV shows are “produced” anyone who knows Jody and his contagious laugh and good nature will agree that there was no acting on his part. Good things do happen to good people, regardless of how things change due to ownership or attitude. Good to see this happen for him and Cathy. Don’t get me wrong not defending Bowlero, just nice to see this happen.
