Quick Rules Question
« on: December 20, 2011, 03:50:56 AM »
Is this a violation of the USBC league rules?  Yes or no?

16 lane center, 14 teams using lanes 3-16.

Question is this:  Is it a violation to allow a team to have "open play" / "warmup games" before league on the pair they will be bowling competition on that evening?

Example:  Say my team is bowling league on lanes 3-4 that night.  Should I OR any member of my team OR the opposition be allowed to "practice" / "warmup" / "open bowl" on lanes 3-4.

My thinking is this:  If I were on 3-4 that night I SHOULD be able to "practice" / "warmup" / "open bowl" BEFORE league on any pair OTHER than what I will be competing on but NOT the pair I will be on.  If I warm up on say lanes 9-10 BOTH teams on 9-10 that night will face the same conditions thereby offering them ZERO advantage of how that pair is playing, both teams are approaching the same conditions so there is no inherent "advantage".  If a team practices on THEIR pair, they DO gain an advantage of knowing how their pair is playing.

So again,  is it a violation to allow a team to have "open play" / "warmup games" before league on the pair they will be bowling competition on that evening?

No it is not against USBC rules but leagues may adopt their own rules about this as long as the center agrees to it.  USBC states they cannot make rules that control what the center does as a private business.

It is rule 100a/5 in the FAQ for this rule.

I am not sure if the League could put in this as a rule. The only thing the league could work out with the center is maybe having the lanes oiled prior to the league starting.

I have bowled on several leagues where you are allowed to practice before league but not on the pair you bowl on. It was written into the league rules

I don't really see the advantage unless it's a sports shot and you're trying to create some dry for yourself on the outside.  THS, the practice session should be enough time to get lined up.  In fact, I'd rather not shoot on my pair ahead of time so I don't burn up my A-game line.

What would be kind of scandalous, would be bowl a couple games on a competors pair and throw plastic down the 3rd arrow on every shot.

Building on jaydee's point, I used to bowl a league that only allowed you to bowl on the pair that you would use later.  It was a money league, and it kept people from jumping on a lane and jacking up someone else's pair.

Imagine the outrage of this scenario:  Late in the season, team in 2nd place shows up early and torches the middle of the lanes for the team in 1st place.  1st place team gets shut out and former 2nd place team wins league.

Strictly a league issue that is should be allowed or not allowed by league rules as voted on by teams.  Not a USBC issue at all.

In a saturday league I bowl on, they will only allow open play/warm-up games on the pair you are to bowl on that night. It came about because there are several high game/mixed doubles/brackets being run. The league instituted this rule due to complaints from previous years of open play bowlers messing with the line of the league bowlers. I guess I do understand because a really good night can net you over $1000 depending on how many events you enter
