Grand Illusion vs Rival
« on: September 20, 2008, 10:41:11 AM »
My brother came over today and surprised me with a brand new Columbia Rival. He heard me talking about getting one about a week ago but I decided to get a Grand Illusion instead which I just ordered on Tuesday. I of course didn't say anything to my brother about the GI but I was wondering if  these two would make a good 1 2 punch? I think from what I've read, the Rival would roll much earlier and the GI would be longer but stronger on the back end. All I wanted was a solid reactive with a nice controlled medium arch type motion. Which one would be better suited for what I want?

Lane conditions are as follows: 37 foot pattern buffed to 40. Oiled 10 to 10...
I have a medium track, above average speed and revs. (Tweener)

I have the Rival, and actually, while it's a good benchmark ball, at OOB it's not very early at all.  A decent midlane with a decent pop.  I think the GI is actually very similar to it and there's not much one can do that the other can't.  By nature the GI might be a bit stronger since it comes polished and can still outhook the Rival in my opinion.  I have my Rival at 2000 though because I wanted it a bit smoother, and I feel at 1000 it would give the reaction you're assuming, in which case having them both could be a pretty good combo if you're just looking for a different reaction.  If you were looking for a step down from the GI but is still smooth I'd like into a Street Rod or Pluto because I think Rival is not much of a step down from the GI.

Hope this has helped, weren't sure if you were looking for another ball to go with that GI but thought I'd share my thoughts on that.

Thanks for the input, I think I'm going to drill up the GI and see if I like it. (First Roto ball) If I do, then I will probably sell or trade the Rival and pick me up another Roto Grip or Storm ball.
