Urethane and slower ball speed
« on: August 14, 2021, 06:44:08 PM »
Only looking for yes or no answers: With slower ball speed 14 to 15 MPH rev rate 328 ish higher lever bowler would urethane be a solid option or would carry be an issue ? I would only use on shorter patterns or when the ram is in play from right of 7

YES!!!!

Carry is always an issue. Just listen to the Pros whine even when they're using REACTIVE URETHANE EQUIPMENT. "Carry Sucked on that lite shot". WHAAAA!!!!!
I wanna be number 1. Just like Sean Rash.

In my opinion, no.  Your stats aren't terribly different from mine.  For me, slower ball speed and a little rev dominant is a lousy matchup for urethane.  If you try to square up it will hook and burn up way to early forcing you to swing the ball.  Your lower rev rate will probably leave flat 10's all day.  I prefer plastic (with a dynamic core) much more than urethane for shorter patterns.  I do my own version of "red ball up 5" with my XXXL.  I get the look I want to get from urethane but never seem to.

Get a light weight Badger urethane and polish the little monster. Forget about the corners. Any change in going up the line, speed, hand position will still kick out corners.
Besides you're 14- 15mph ball speed and rev rate is just perfect for a little swing shot too with urethane. It makes it easier to determine if want to use a mild reactive ball when you think your shot is going away. Easier to to square up the shot a little and roll down with a little lift to still carry out the corners.

I have a teammate whose ball speed and revs are slightly lower than Remmah's, yet he insists on throwing urethane on most conditions. We stopped counting corner pin leaves.

Agreed.  Carry will be an issue.  The longer you stick with it the worse your carry will be (typically).

When the night starts backends are clean and the ball is probably clean.  Carry can be decent.  However, every shot carries oil down lane and also adds oil to the coverstock, which is not really going to soak up oil like resin, so it will stop reading friction as well as it did earlier.

If it were legal to spray a good ball cleaner every game to clean excess oil off the cover carry would be somewhat better, but you'd still fight your own carry-down.

I have a friend who is high revs with good speed and he does better than most with my U-Motion that I barely use.

A nice strategy to  use if someone else is using urethane against you is to move just outside of their line so their carry-down creates hold area for you.

It really depends on the bowler using urethane equipment. Have one polished and another sanded to 500 to 600 grit. That combo will get anyone thru a 3 game set any day of the week when the condition of the lanes call for some control. Most nights when I used urethane exclusively I always had at least 10 boards to swing my shot. As the night progressed if I left a corner pin I moved my feet gradually into where my break point was and still had room to swing it a little. Not having to shoot at corner pins all night or worry about carry down. Some of those nights I even rolled an old RC5 just to piss off my opposite opponent while he's tossing the newest reactive. And yeah. I won every point. It helps to get into the opposing teams head too. Makes them angry and make bad shots.

WHAT HE JUST SAID!!

I just got back in town from a bowling tourney in Pennsylvania. My doubles partner threw urethane all the damn day.......and carry was an issue..... all day long!

He had some remarkably clean games but his high game was 232. Left the back row all day long! And yes, I played just outside of his line most of the day as well!

Are you 14-15 at release or downlane?  That in itself matters a great deal.  Another thing to note; is that out of the box surface on these urethanes is a dull surface (1000 or 2000 abralon). With your slower ball speed; you could go with the Purple Pearl Hammer and sand up to 4000 and or try and add polish.  But a good option to go to is the new Spy by Radical if that 14-15 ball speed is at your release instead of your breakpoint.

I wish someone still made a plastic ball with a symmetric core.  I took my XXXL to the pro shop to get the thumb plugged and re-drilled since it's been chipping all around for some time now.  I hope it doesn't crack when they drill out the slug especially since they'll have to use a bigger bit to make a clean hole.  Radical and Pyramid both have plastic with asymmetric cores which I'm not sure I understand.  I know what asymmetric brings to the table, but since cover is 70% or so of a balls reaction, what advantage does it have?  I bowled left handed for a year and the one thing I wanted was plastic with a core.  I used 14# since the 15# felt heavy.  I got a Hammer True Blood and I didn't like the reaction near as much as my XXXL.  Plastic with a core works really well for slower ball speeds on high friction patterns.  I know they will never be big sellers, but still surprised that the ones that have been available have been mostly asymmetric.

Strider......I think that what you really want is a plastic ball with a BIG core in it. Just in case you didn't know.........everytime your driller or PSO puts holes in your ball, whether its symmetric or asymmetric doesn't matter. That ball then becomes slightly ASYMMETRIC just because of the holes were placed into the core!

That's true, although the amount of asymmetry added wouldn't have a big affect on a plastic ball.  I just with there was a symmetric plastic ball still available.  I know my XXXL won't last forever.  I've shot some big scores with it on shorter sport shots.  I think there are layouts that make asymmetric almost symmetric, but won't need to worry about it unless something happens to the XXXL.  Maybe it's because I match up better with symmetric in general, but was still thinking about the OP, not that he's responded lately.  Plastic with a core might be better than urethane considering his stats.
