Urethane Ball recommendation
« on: May 07, 2017, 08:09:11 PM »
Hi everyone,

Bowled a tournament today and did absolutely horrible. It was a Cheetah pattern layer out over a pattern that was previously on the lanes. I don't have a Urethane ball and have made the decision it's time to pick one up.

I'm considering ether the Storm Pitch Black or the Motiv Tank Rampage. Any recommendations?

Please give your bowling style; Speed/rev rate, pin to pap, and the conditions you mainly bowl on 41 ft, 38 ft, etc; That way, you'll receive proper recommendations on what you fit you best.

PAP - 5 1/4 Over 7/8 Up
Speed - 18.5 (can go as low as 15 and as high as 21 but normally sit right at 18.5 at the foul line.
Rev Rate - 300 - appx.
I bowl on both THS and Sport. Don't think I'll ever use this ball on THS. This week was PBA Cheetah, last week was PBA Scorpion 47', the week prior was a 43' version of Scorpion, next week is ABT #8 (36', 24.55ml).

Thanks!

I see in your profile that you have a Teal Rhino Pro (mild reactive by today's standards) and a Phantom asym urethane). Did you try those?
League: Pitch Purple, Destiny Magenta
Testing: MVP
Interests: Black Widow, Proof Solid, Idol Pearl

Thanks for the response.

I've shelved these balls as they have nearly no reaction.

I find it odd you aren't getting anything out of the Phantom.  My Phantom hooks a ton.  In fact, I have to get deep enough where I don't get the carry I like, unless I really slow down.  On my THS, I am easily playing 13-5 with the Phantom.

The issue is completely me. I had the ball drilled, plugged, and redrilled some 20 years ago. It's not drilled properly. Don't really want to plug and redrill again. Really need to go something new.

Pitch Black has been very popular with a lot of pros.  I have a Pitch Blue ( same core weaker cover ) and have also had the original Natural and the Blue Hammer.  I like the core shell matchup on the Pitch Blue and Black very well.  My ball speed favors the Blue, but you would probably like the Black better.  In any even you can tame it down if you want.

The key with any urethane is to be able to square up and go more direct to the pocket.  If lanes are hooking to much to play direct you are better off getting deep and using a tame resin ball.  Urethane has also never been useful to me on any flat patterns longer than about 37 feet.

My experience is find one that allows you to play up the boards.  Depending on your stats and conditions it may vary.  For me, and for what I see from others, if the urethane is too strong and forces you in, then you will lose carry.  The strongest may not be the best option for your game.

Personally, one of the best urethane I've seen is the Rebel Tank. Urethane you can stay right with because of the pearl.

My favorite "urethane" right now is the Super Natural.  It goes much longer than a traditional urethane, and has a little more on the back.

Urethane is a completely different motion than modern day balls. Everyone is right that the best reaction and hitting power is when you keep it in front of you. With your speed and rev rate, I would say a Black Hammer would do the trick nicely. Black Hammer is early and smooth. Very easy to read the shape and make the small adjustments. The Purple Pearl Hammer is almost as strong but is a little longer but still smooth. The Blue Hammer is longer yet and has a little pop down lane. Not a lot but more than most Urethanes do. I believe the Purple and Blue will be to weak overall with your bowling style. The Black is stronger and earlier.

Thanks! These weren't on my radar until now. I thought at one point about plugging and redrilling my Phantom or possibly selling or trading for something. Thanks for bringing the hammers to my attention!
