Is straighter greater?
« on: January 30, 2008, 01:04:07 AM »
How many out there are using a straighter line to the pocket?  Where do you stand and what arrow are you throwing over?  Do you find that a straighter line will work well on most conditions and require less adjustments?

I have noticed that as we get older it is more difficult to maintain the big hook and to adjust to changing conditons as well as when we were young.  For that reason I have been trying a straighter line between the 2nd and 3rd arrows.  I am standing with my left foot on 20 and turning my shoulders slightly towards the pocket.  Then I try to stay behind the ball and throw between 10 and 15 with some speed.  If there is a lot of oil, I use a ball with surface.  If they are on the dry side, I use a polished of pearl surface.  So far it seems to be working fairly well.

Has anyone else tried this line?  If not, do you get better results moving more to the right (for right handers) and come more off the corner?

Any comments would be appreciated.

This post just caught my eye & strangely enough I just decided to change my game about a month ago. I've always thrown a hook with lots of axis rotation & quite a bit of axis tilt.(too much) It's served me well on right conditions, but not good on tougher oilier shot.
Anyway, I now stay more behind the ball getting about 45* axis rotation, less tilt, & much more forward roll. In my house I'm playing across 10 at the arrows, only out to 6 or 7, & for me that's a pretty straight line. The ball actually has great hitting power & good carry.
I like the roll on the ball much better & plan to stick with it. So far it has not hurt my game, but to be honest I haven't tried it on different conditions.

for the last 4 or 5 yrs i had been playing more hook, trying to hit the ball more cover more boards..and had been improving over time.  sometimes something in my timing gets out of whack, and i couldnt correct it.  when it happened earlier this year i just decided to go straighter.  with my vapor zone i went from around 13 at the arrows to 5 at 40 feet to  7 at the arrows 4 at 35 feet.  angle entry is still good, and im not covering as many boards.  ive stuck with it since (early oct) and averaging about 215 over 60 some odd games.  more importantly ive been much more accurate and consistent.  carry hasnt been great, but they are mostly solid 7's and  as opposed to weak 7's, along with some solid 6's as well.  on a tougher shot its all about staying out of trouble, and 7 pins are better than 2-4-7's, much less splits.  it has led to consistency in the 640-680 range, and thats fine by me.

I've played both far out and far in and typically not in the middle. Personally, if I miss while playing out, I miss badly and the ball doesn't come back and I leave all sorts of crap. I guess it depends on the player but I am more comfortable playing in the middle-left and throwing at 2nd arrow at a more straighter line. For me, it's less variables to deal with as I cut the angle issue out of the equation.

Thats isnt straight
I usually play around the 5th board, and sending it out close to the 5th board at the Bp.

The old saying remains true..
"Straighter is greater, unless more is required"

Knowing when to play more hook is sometimes difficult.
If you pay more attention to your angle and carry it becomes easier though.

I prefer a straighter shot.  I find on the more difficult patterns you get into less trouble and the adjustments are a little easier.

In THS houses or leagues, straighter isn't greater.  On challenging lane conditions, yes straighter is greater.

With all this talk about going straighter, I decided to find a straight line and play it last night.

The 1st game it took some time to be comfortable and find a line. I had a 60 count in the 5th frame but finished the game with 5 bagger and spare for a 194.

2nd game still trying to get a feel for it and had a 199. Missed my only 10 pin of the night in the 10th.

3rd game 7 pin and spare and then 9 in a row. 2nd ball in the 10 was another 7 pin and finished with a 278.

I think I can score much more consistantly by going straigher to the pocket and I will keep on working at it. My main fear was not carrying the 10 pin (I'm only about 65-75% on converting 10's) but I had no problem all night with it. Straighter just may be greater.

I play straight. I have been bowling for 6 years and my current avg on THS is 196. On fresh THS conditions, I stand with my left foot on the 18th board and I aim at the 8th board up to approx. the 5th board. As the match progresses, I will either move my left foot a few boards to the left with the same target  or move my target towards the 10th board. I find that this works best for me.
