Usbc nationals and weight holes
« on: March 17, 2020, 10:15:46 PM »
Hi guys,

With the corona virus, I heard the Nationals are being postponed till May and extended till August.  We are trying to reschedule in August.  I was bringing a ball with a weight hole to bowl, but technically after August 1st it will be illegal.  Think they will extend ban on weight holes till September 1st to keep playing field level?

I would guess no, since bowlers have had 2 years notice of the elimination of weight holes.  However, the USBC is anything but predictable.  Might be best to email them and ask.  They usually respond quickly to inquiries.

The date choice of August 1 was intentional in terms of annual fall memberships ending on July 31 unless participating in an event that starts in the spring/summer.  I would think that they would postpone the change to the end of nationals to keep an even playing field... we shall see!

Agree with moving it till after Nationals are completed. How can you let the majority of the field potentially use weight holes but tell the folks that had to reschedule to after August 1 you can’t use weight holes? No way that flies.

It would be reasonable to allow balance holes for the entire nationals tournament.

But this is USBC; when was last time they have been reasonable?  Reasonability Probably goes back to when we had ABC instead.

Theoretically the same issue will potentially come up on short season leagues this summer.  Say you get a 12 week league that starts June 1st.  The weight hole ban will start 2/3 of the way through.  Anyone using a ball with a weight hole will have to stop using it.

Different situation for leagues.   Everyone playing by same rules begore and after.  USBC will clearly allow bowlers after AUG 1 to have weight holes since bowlers prior can have them at nationsls.

Although it seems pretty obvious to allow weight holes throughout the tournament, new bowling balls get released throughout the tournament that early participants don't have access to so you never know.  Put it this way, I wouldn't be shocked if they stuck to the August 1st ban on weight holes.

true, but his argument is more along the lines of not everyone who bowls will get the same chance to use a ball with a weight hole.  yours is more along the lines of, all people will have to stop.  your thing is at least a level playing field.

They would have to allow all bowling in the tournament to use equipment with weight holes or it becomes unfair. One person shouldn't be able to use a ball with a weight hole and then another person cannot because of the tournament being suspended. Once the tournament starts with the weight hole, the same tournament needs to finish with the weight.

A quick email to the USBC solicited the following response to this issue:

"At this time, there in no change in the bowling ball rule specification changing as of August 1.

However, USBC is aware of the issue and is taking the matter under further consideration.

If a change is made, it will be posted on bowl.com."
