changing axis tilt
« on: July 13, 2009, 04:13:21 PM »
ive been getting lessons with my bowling and i am getting better. I have been bowling in more tournaments and fairing well. I've been making money in brackets and placing in the top 32 in quite a few of these tournaments. Well the last tournament I went to I had a HUGE issue with carrying. I tried playing different areas of the lane from outside 5, to around 10, to even inside tight, to free wheeling the lane, but the result was the same. seven pins, ten pins, or eight pins. I am a lefty with about 18 with ball speed, my rev rate is around average and I don't have much axis tilt. Is there anyway I can learn to increase my axis tilt?

You sure you want to increase axis tilt and not axis rotation? Very seldom is it a good idea to increase axis tilt.

id agree with ron... and IMO having low tilt is usually desired with todays equipment. changing rotation... late in the release i.e. (pete weber) is something that could be a good option to have but even he admits it gets him into a lot of trouble with reactive bowling balls.

perhaps a video of your release or of you just bowling could give us a better idea of exactly how you throw the ball and then we can MAYBE make a suggestion.

Don't worry about tilt.  Each person's tilt is inherent to them, it's based on how your body is built not in how you release the ball.

Axis rotation is something all bowlers should strive to manipulate.  Going from 0* rotation to 90* can open up a new world to many bowlers.  0 to 90* might be a stretch for some but learning how to increase and decrease axis rotation to more or less than your normal release will do wonders.

backswing_aplenty,

I have to disagree that axis tilt is inherent to the bowler. I change bowler's axis tilts all the time. It's not the easiest thing to change for some bowlers but some pick up on it right away.

For some bowlers it is the most important thing that I change.

I have to generally agree that learning to increase tilt probably just leads to an uncontrollable ball reaction.  Since you are going to try to do it anyway, maybe asking the question backward would be more helpful (to learn to do it and to correct it later).

Any advice from the knowledgeable on reducing axis tilt?

Backwards,
I wrote about axis tilt and how to change it in the May 2009 issue of BTM.
I am sure you are a subscriber right?

If not come to "The Gathering" next weekend and I will show you.

Now if you bowl backwards you may have to turn the magazine inside out to read it or something.
