Sponsoring a college team
« on: February 11, 2006, 04:24:34 PM »
i know that some of the higher ups from the various bowling companies peruse this forum, so i wanted to know what's the route a school has to take, to be considered for sponsorship, and if any of the companies are willing to sponsor a school?

I would guess if your school were to finish in the top 5 in the collegiate nationals a few yrs in a row, then someone would be willing to talk.  I would go out of a limb and say that few of these actually truely exist.  Otherwise (and probably the more likely route), know someone on the inside.
On a side note, most major ball companies offer some sort of collegiate discount (some companies are better than others)... You would have to contact the companies directly for details and pricing.  In the past, it varied from simply placing a call over the phone to having orders faxed placed on official school letterhead using a university purchasing card...

It's the same as the "Pro" staffers.  Ask yourself, what's in it for them?  You have to help them to sell their product.  If your team is a consistent bottom 5 finisher at the 4 tournaments you bowl in every year, then you're not getting sponsored.  Look at the teams that have some sort of sponsorship.  Wichita State, Moorehead, Nebraska, Western IL (they were sponsored by AMF a few years back not sure if that changed with the whole Columbia 300 switch up) just to mention a few.  These are teams that consistently win and place high at tournaments throughout the year, a lot of tournaments, they also produce more than their share of big names, Barnes, Steelsmith, RASH, from Wichita (I know there are more), Robin Crawford and Kelly Kulick from Moorehead, Diandra Hyman-Asbaty, Shannon Pluhosky, from Nebraska, Sonnenfeld and Sapp from Western.  You go to a college tournament and you just know that these teams will be up there.  So after your school builds a name, you have to pound the pavement.  Some of it is timing as these companies have budgets like everyone else and they might be full up on their sponsorships.
