vinyl is not as smooth as urethane. Most people say they hang up in vinyl.

I have used vinyl slugs (drillable) and urethane. I personally prefer the urethane, but there are folks who like the vinyl - not talking inserts, but solid slugs.
Vinyl can sometimes feel tackier than urethane - I find that vinyl irritates my thumb a bit - but I'm allergic to lots of stuff.

Agree with the Vinyl being tackier than urethane. In fact, in my area, I can't remember someone even asking for a vinyl....urethane is the choice all the way.

I've got round vinyl slugs in two of mine.  They're very smooth, but they didn't start that way.  They came shiny/polished looking, but my driller used a little sanding disc to add some surface to them.  Just a quick in-and-out with the dremel-looking sander made them very smooth, not sticky at all.

vinyl slugs are softer, drill very well, but they are affected by the pigment put in them to make the colors.  The darker the color, the harder they are to get smooth.  When you do get them smooth though, vinyl slugs are very slick.  I wipe them down with some acetone after drilling, this melts the vinyl slightly and makes them slick.  A little soapstone helps too, very slick!!!

Urethane slugs are a harder material, same feel color to color.  You can get these very smooth too, put a piece of scotch brite on your sander instead of sand paper, verrrrry nice!

Urethane is the way to go !!!

You'll never see vinyl in my shop. with my proshop partner being allergic to them it seems, natural to go with urethane. as for people requesting the sleeves, i can easily make a custom thumb mold for them instead.
