How to change your axis tilt?
« on: October 21, 2003, 04:56:27 AM »
Chris Barnes mentioned on the PBA show that he needed a little more tilt to carry the 10 pin.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounded like he wanted to increase his tilt to add a little length, so the ball would hit harder on the back end.  It looks like you can change your tilt by cocking your wrist and leaving it that way even after release.  I normally cock my wrist, but then I uncock it at release and lower my tilt.  I find it difficult to repeat if I simply think "don't uncock" at release.  I am looking for something to do at setup that should trigger this change.

i know that more axis rotation == skid longer, bigger backend.
and opposite for less axis rotation ..

but what axis tilt ? how to determine ?

If Chris said he needed more tilt it was because his ball was burning up too much. That's why he leaves the 10 pins on the show. I have heard Chris say that before and he has trouble doing it. There are other ways to keep the ball from burning up too much, I think he needs to start doing those. It has cost him several titles.

Magic what are the other methods?

Tilt, what is it?

Put a mark or piece of tape on your non track side of ball!  6 3/4 inches from grip center straight out.

If when you throw the ball the tape is parallel to the lane then one has 0 axis tilt and is usually a high tracker!

If the tape faces the ceiling one has 90 axis tilt and one is a pure spinner.

Most are in between!

I'm a high tracker with about 12 degrees axis tilt.  When I see the reactions that Chris Barnes gets from the pins and occassional rollout I think of seeing many of the same things in my throwing and pin reactions.  (not as good of course!).

Some experts who have seen me have said that just changing my tilt to about 17 degrees would make all the difference! (tape pointing more above the lane than currently).

PS I don't know if this is what he is doing but When Danny Wiseman is changing things to start striking I think this is what he does.

LuckyLefty,
You ask about other methods to keep the ball from burning up.
Are you asking for you or for Chris Barnes? In Barnes case he just needs a slight change. First thing I would suggest is curl his little finger. (not everyone can do that) The second sugestion would be to add just a little more axis rotation. What is bruning up? Burning up is the GIVING UP of axis rotation, so give the ball just a little more axis rotation so it will have it to give up.

I don't know about all this axis tilt stuff, but I do know when the lanes are fried if break my wrist back, the ball skids further down the lane has more side roll left at the pin deck and gets out that flat 10 pin...

Ok,

Now we've gotten Chris Barnes straightened out.

What about me?

Next the world!

REgards,

PS I still think one guy who does not need this help is Danny Wiseman.

When he is "ON" enough to be on TV that guy ALWAYS finds a way to carry!!
