walter ray signs !
« on: October 31, 2003, 06:30:33 AM »
a bowling related company finally has the brains to sign walter ray williams, jr., to a contract-------it's dexter shoes. he is still an independent as far as equipment is concerned-----unbelievable considering he's arguably the greatest ever. at least there's ONE comany smart enough to sign him.

I will never understand why he is a free agent. same goes for norm duke. is Voss signed?

I can see how the big companys want the young gun players and market to the 15-30 year olds

but the small comapnies like Visionary,Lane 1, Roto-Grip, DynoThane and AZO should be able to afford him for at least a year.

If I was a small comany I would even give him a pct of sales if he could increase profits.

Maybe his asking price scares companies away.
Whenever he makes shows no one comes on here and says teach me how to throw it like Walter.
Now when Robert Smith is on everyone jumps on his bandwagon.
free agency it is until i get a better offer.   LMAO

He had the best yr ever last yr as a free agent, using whatever equipment matched up best for the given week/shot. Why would he want to sign and be restricted? Who knows, if he was stuck with Columbia all yr, he wouldn't have done nearly as well as he did. Luckily, used Dynothane alot and made the $.

So he signed with a show company, who cares what shoes they wear. Look at Duke, Voss and PDW, they wear the el cheapo shoes.

I was at the Bowl Expo, when WR approached Lane 1, and the deal is he wants way tooooo much for his services.  Richie offered to give free equipment, but WR wanted a yearly fee as well.  I told him I would love to see the best stuff in the hands of the best bowler, and his manager said it's all about the cah, and what the company can do for Walter.  I returned the statement with, "so it's all about greed"?  It's always about what the company can do for the bowler money wise, when money should be discussed after there is a factual increase in company profits, from increased sales, due to the bowler.  Walter could have accepted Richie's offer, and if the company (which is small compared to Columbia, Storm, etc...) made money, then a percentage could be discussed.  If I was as good as Walter, and already had the cash he has, I would take just free equipment, and the only money I would be concerned about would be that which I would consistently win, with the best stuff I have ever thrown.

Saw Mill,

Just like a top Basketball player economic value is tied to does he put them in there seats.

Walter does.

You are correct does he increase ball sales.  With Walter almost no.
He is so good and so adept at winning it seems with anything that people almost think it IS JUST him.

In addition ball companies are starting to think appearances on shows are NOT really leading to increased purchases to a great extent.
What seems to be helping sales is guys on staff who go to demo days or seminars and really relate to the assembled bowlers.

Some guys are really great at this other's maybe aren't or won't.

Unfortunately, many contracts also fall into the category of "what have you done lately" and lately, WRW isn't doing much that would showcase the equipment.  That could very well change before the end of the season, but with many companies being scarce with salaried deals, the first quarter of the season would not instill a great deal of confidence in the decision-makers (aka bean counters).

Also, some players are comfortable to stay with one line while others prefer to sample the field.  WRW has indicated that he is comfortable using multiple manufacturers.  That may also be a factor in decision making...you like to have your staff players expressing the merits of the equipment (you know, the whole sales thing).

Do you know if he pays for his equiptment now?
I would have thought he gets all of his balls free.
So why would he want to tie himself down to 1 company just for free equiptment?
I know in golf people get all sorts of things free, just to be seen wearing their logos. Oakley, as an example, were big distibuters of free of charge glasses on the European Tour at one time.
I dont know how bowling works though.
