How's this for fair?
« on: August 05, 2003, 02:40:35 AM »
Seems to me a flat pattern gutter to gutter for "x" feet would be more fair to all bowlers (as long as you don't go past 45').  That way, everyone has the same units of oil on "their line" when starting out, and nobody can benefit from the "bank shot off the wall".  Since the balls today hit harder and carry better, everyone should be able to find a line to the pocket and score well.  Then it comes down to hitting your mark and repeating the shot.  Viola!! The best bowler wins again (as always)!

I agree. A flat shot would give everyone the same line and reaction (atleast for same styles).

If you watched the PWBA in their summer swing, almost every pattern put out had more oil on the right. I am pretty sure that they use the same shot during the qualifying session. What this tells me is that they were setting the right side up for when the lanes would break down. This would also give the lefties swing room to the left. That is why you were seeing bowlers like Tish Johnson, Tiff Stanbrough, and Dede Davidson (all lefties) swing the ball to the gutter, and the bowlers on the rt (including Michelle Feldman) have an out of bounds to deal with.

Man, I hate to disagree on this one, but I do.  A flat shot will not play the same:  different amounts of play and wear across the lane make it so.  Many houses also have house tracks so a flat shot does not make it fair.  The only shot that I know that gives everyone the same shot through anything more than a shot or two is a mild crown, say 3 or 4 to 1. More in the middle, where more balls tend to go, less as you move outside.

Flat is not the way to go.  Reason is that there are more right handers that can dry up a track area much much faster.  I bowl on this almost everyday practicing.  I start by playing up 8 to 10 for a game or so.  By then, there is enough of a track built up where I can switch to something more aggressive and move into about 15 and play a fade out to that track.  Since there are alot less lefties, it takes much longer to develop a track area, and thus they have to continue to make quality shot after shot in order to keep up with a righty.  The only TRUE fair shot, is the sport shot.

Term, Rags, & T-God,
True, there are more righties to track up the lane, but won't they still track up a crown pattern?  Also, I think with the crown, you get everyone playing the same breakpoint - they may get to that spot at different angles, but they all are shooting for that area around 30-40 ft. that's a little drier to start the ball moving toward the pocket.

With a flat pattern, a fluffer will either angle his shot in or play more in the middle, where the strokers and tweeners can play a little further out, and the cranker can play the far outside or swing it a little.  This creates multiple lines as opposed to one thick "grooved" shot being played.

Just a thought; if more play by the righties creates an advantage, then the lefties (when significantly outnumbered) should be at a disadvantage regardless of oil pattern.  Any truth to that way of thinking?

Look at T-God's pattern.  It is what I am thinking of.  Further, a flat shot, will track up more inconsistently than a crown and will wear out sooner unless it is a total flood.  The moves are more predictable on a crown -- shots don't generally suddenly disappear unless it is a very light crown.  Of course, very light flat oil is just stupid inconsistent.

9, it's better to have the same breakpoint down the lane, than in front. When it's in front, the heads break down, and the ball won't slide/skid in the front, which it's supposed to do.

The pattern I put down, allows for straight players to play outside(first arrow), tweaners to play 2nd arrow, and crankers to play 3rd. It also allows you to switch balls, either stronger or weaker, moving left or right, and still give you a skid, roll, hook reaction, across the whole lane..!!

Because bowlers will be able to play different lines, the lanes won't get tracked up as fast. Plus, using heavy amounts of oil, when they do break down, the lane will flatten out and not get reversed(drier in the front and/or middle). =:^D

Thanks for the input guys.  Guess I don't have too much experience on a crown shot - I've bowled on a flat pattern, and we all see the wall too much these days.  I prefer the flat pattern to the wall actually, because my stuff tends to hook up early on the lane (I get a lot of heavy roll for some reason) and I am constantly searching for oil.  The flat pattern usally would allow me to play outside of everyone else (almost having the line completely to myself!) I usually get too drastic a reaction from bouncing off the wall, and I am not consistent enough to not leave 2 or 3  4-6-somehting splits when trying to do so.  My initial thought (even with your diagram) was that the crown shot was a variation of the wall - but now I see it is not.  Thanks for taking the time and having the patience to clarify that.

Fall leagues are starting soon, so good luck!!

Something I didn't see mentioned is that a flat shot is COMPLETELY dependent on the skill level of the bowlers on the lane.
If you've got bowlers throwing a house ball down the middle, the shot will break down into a reverse block. If you've got everyone playing the track with porous equipment, it will break down to a tube shot. (I definitely prefer the latter).
I certainly don't know what would be truly fair between right handed and left handed. I guess a symmetrical shot, and make sure there are as many lefties as righties on each pair???

Mumzie, the uneven number of righties and lefties is a reason one needs a crown like t-god's, slightly lighter on the left.  A flat shot will not break down or break down consistently.
