What do you work on in practice ?
« on: July 20, 2007, 04:03:36 AM »
After going to a bowling clinic for 3 days with Fred Borden i realized even though i practice alot alost all the time i just end up "throwing balls" when i should be focusing on one thing to work on for that session. My question is whats your practice schedule ? Do you pick one or 2 things you wanna work on ? and bowl 1 or 2 games for score ?

When practicing on the THS, all I work on is balance.  If I am perfectly balanced everything else falls into place and I can hit the pocket 99% of the time.

PRACTICE?!  I mean, we're talking about practice?

Seriously though I usually just make sure the timing is good and work on balance because I have issues with that that always creep in.

Spare shooting is always a part of the practice.  Aside from that it depends on what has gone wrong in leagues or what I am working on with my coach. Scores are unimportant in practice, though I did let my coach know I had a 270 and Varipapa 298 in practice

It depends, if I've been struggling with something specific (timing for example) that's what I'll work on.  My biggest two ongoing issues are releasing the ball cleanly and getting the proper knee bend.  So if I have nothing else to work on, I focus on those to issues.  I never worry about score.  If I throw a bad shot, instead of shooting the spare, lots of times I will line up for a strike and try to correct the mistake I made on the first ball

I'm usually trying to break some old habits, usually the same ones, again and again.

I do try to bowl 1 or 2 games for score at the end.

it depends. if my spare shooting isn't as sharp as i'd like then i'll practice shooting spares. if i've got a pba regional tournament coming up soon i'll practice shooting the type of line/angle that i think will work best on that particular pattern. sometimes i'll practice every line in practice----from the 1st board all the way to the 5th arrow and then back again. sometimes i like to try adjustments in speed control or axis rotation.

We only have one house in our small town, so unless you are shooting on the weekly sport shot league, there aren't a whole lot of surprises from week to week. Since my arsenal (collection is more like it) is up to around a dozen balls, practice for me is usually just getting some games in with something that I haven't thrown as much. Will usually take 2 solid reactives, a reactive pearl, and usually a particle. Get to practice my strike ball and still get plenty of spare practice as well. Does help that I usually only pay $5 for 3 games any day/time of the week.

Practice for me usually consists of throwing a few games straight up the gutter w/ a plastic or urethane, a few in the track area, a few deep inside, and usually a game of nothing but corner pins.

When practicing I don't focus on scores.  It is more about focusing on a solid approach, hitting your mark consistently, and working on any little parts of your game you feel need help.  Scoring is nice, but in the long run, working on things you don't do well will make you better.

Right now I am working on keeping my speed down. I do not care about the score or if the line is working. I just want to keep my speed around 16mph for an entire game.
