1960's patent for an epoxy resin coverstock
« on: May 11, 2016, 11:30:45 PM »
I found this online and forund it quite interesting.         http://www.google.com/patents/US3208750
It is a patent from the 1960's for an epoxy resin cover bowling ball, submitted by voit rubber company. I know AMF made some balls with the name voit. Were those made from this patented cover? I am assuming this would be a different type of "epoxy" than what would appear 40 years later on amf and Columbia 300 balls?

Hard telling.  It is certainly possible that balls could have been made of a different material and not gained any real interest.  Polyester balls were introduced in 1960, but were not thought of as any great leap compared to the standard hard rubber balls in performance.  Only after the introduction of the much harder urethane lane finish around 1970 did the advantage of soft polyester balls, and ultimately urethane and resin enhanced urethane become apparent.

I do remember a couple of guys during the early 60's in our local center bought clear amber balls that were supposedly made out of Lucite.  Again while interesting to watch nobody saw any advantage to using them compared to Black Beauties and Three Dots.

I would love to talk to a tech guy from one of the manufacturers about this.

Bradley, Avabob was talking about the urethane lane finish not the coverstock.

The center I was working at put in the urethane finish either 1969 or 1970, so he's spot on for the time period, but I am not sure how much earlier it was available before our center switched over.

Brunswick came out with it's astrolane epoxy in 1970
. Other urethane finishes may have been out a little sooner but the epoxy was the hardest.  However pros like Don  Johnson soon discovered that polyester balls reacted better than traditional rubber balls on the harder finishes
