Here's my experience. For a little while, I experimented with cupping the wrist and coming around the side of the ball, hooking most of the lane. But one day out of curiosity, I decided to free my swing up as much as possible and just keep a sraight but firm wrist. It ended up being a cross between a tweener and stroker for me, playing a medium-small swing. But what shocked me was that it was really easy to repeat, and oddly enough, I actually got MORE power at the pins. Even though hooking the lane is famous for great pin action, somehow I just started blowing up racks. I was getting the same crazy light strikes the supercrankers get, playing from 15-5 at about 16mph at the deck. I had more tilt on the ball, but that's due to an improper fit. So I've just started doing that. My line is similar to that of a stroker, but my ball still makes a defined motion like a cranker's ball does. So while this does not really address your question, I think the concept of freeing up your swing and hand is FAR more important than simply "playing straight up". The best advice I never listened to until now is that you should play with as many revs possible while having full control. Once you find that sweetspot, you'll find it's easier to shoot the scores you had before. The only times I shoot under 200 now are when I get lost in the oil pattern and start leaving splits or whatever.
