are lower revs the way to go?
« on: January 09, 2006, 05:26:45 AM »
I usually swing the ball with higher revs.  Now i'm starting to question this approach.  With the strength of the balls now i'm thinking that a lower rev more end over end release (walter ray) is the best approach to higher scoring.

I bowl on a league that puts out very tough lane patterns.  The shot is always changing every week or so.  I just can't score well with the higher rev swing shot at this house.

What do you guys think about the end over end lower rev release playing the down and in line?  Is this the smartest way to bowl now?  Is this the easiest release to master?

I feel with how strong balls are today that the more direct approach and lower revs maybe the best approach instead of the higher rev coast to coast shot.

the question is,...what is your A game ?

Play whatever that is .....depending on what shot is there, pick the equipment to match.

thats' how I look at it.....

Here's my experience.  For a little while, I experimented with cupping the wrist and coming around the side of the ball, hooking most of the lane.  But one day out of curiosity, I decided to free my swing up as much as possible and just keep a sraight but firm wrist.  It ended up being a cross between a tweener and stroker for me, playing a medium-small swing.  But what shocked me was that it was really easy to repeat, and oddly enough, I actually got MORE power at the pins.  Even though hooking the lane is famous for great pin action, somehow I just started blowing up racks.  I was getting the same crazy light strikes the supercrankers get, playing from 15-5 at about 16mph at the deck.  I had more tilt on the ball, but that's due to an improper fit.  So I've just started doing that.  My line is similar to that of a stroker, but my ball still makes a defined motion like a cranker's ball does.  So while this does not really address your question, I think the concept of freeing up your swing and hand is FAR more important than simply "playing straight up".  The best advice I never listened to until now is that you should play with as many revs possible while having full control.  Once you find that sweetspot, you'll find it's easier to shoot the scores you had before.  The only times I shoot under 200 now are when I get lost in the oil pattern and start leaving splits or whatever.

I guess that is a good way to look at it.  This just kind of sucks for me because my A game is more revs and playing the swing shot but at the house I bowl my league at just doesn't catter to my A game.  So my A game will have to be replaced at that house with my B game(end over end, down and in).

I bleieve in today's game...tons of revs is fine...just go more end over end if one can!

I don't think a lot of revs hurt himmler yesterday!

Definitely not in longer or heavier patterns. Our house just put a long medium to medium heavy pattern I would assume and me, with not a massive amount of revs had trouble getting teh ball to get into a strong roll. It doesn't help that my track is fairly low either.

PS.....got off the subject there, but in todays game don't give up the revs.    Maybe learn how to use them different.

I'm never going to give up the higher revs.  I'm just going to adjust to more forward roll and a down and in line for this league.

I still need to practice my higher rev release to get better control and accuracy from it.

My more forward roll release is just much easier to control.  It's time for me to bowl smarter and figure out the lanes better.
