Idea to attract more league bowlers
« on: December 12, 2008, 06:51:12 PM »
I had an idea about how to attract more bowlers to organized bowling. The USBC needs a fun category. Bowlers would buy a "fun" USBC card for, say, $5. When they went open bowling with friends they would be able to input,( swipe, read barcode, type in id number, etc ) so the lane computer would keep track of their scores AND send those scores in to the USBC on a regular schedule. Now these open bowlers can go online and see their fun averages and their friends fun averages. The alley could have fun tournaments (no prize money, just trophys and coupons for free bowling). The point of this would be to get bowlers halfway between open bowlers and league bowlers. I'm sure alot of the fun bowlers would like the more organized "fun" bowling enough to actually go looking for leagues to join. Hey, just a thought.

Good idea but who is going to pay for all the new equipment? All those computers and everything will cost a lot of money. DO you have the USBC pay for it or each center?

All the alleys I bowl at are all computerized already. The bowler data would have to be uploaded to the USBC. There would have to be a program to do it all automatically or it could be uploaded like some of the league secretaries do now. The whole point is to get bowlers more involved than just regular open bowling which in the end seems like it would benefit the alleys.

I organized company fun league for about 8 years, it was a fun league, we have 12 teams of 4 bowlers per team, cost $11.00 per week to cover the lineage, trophy(4 top teams) and party(food, soda) at final week.

My idea wasn't a fun league. The idea was to track their open bowling scores and for them to acquire a "fun" average that they could use in "fun" tournaments or other promotions. Just to get their feet wet in loosely organized bowling. There are a multitude of things the USBC could do with something like this. Coupons for free bowling, ball giveaways, etc. The USBC has no way to track open bowlers. They don't know who to target with any type of promotional or instructional material. If only 10% of open bowlers opted for the fun card that's still a pretty big number and I think the number would be larger if it was promoted the right way.

If that happened, I'd quit leagues, and just join the $5 USBC.

That way I could bowl at my own convenience

The problem with "ideas" like this and such others to attract more bowlers, is that there will always have to be someone on the USBC end to do the work.  No one wants to work for free.  Salaries must be paid.  Strategic analysis and program initiatives must be funded by those doing the research and writing the programs necessary to do such.  And $5 per person just may not be enough to fund such an operation.  The USBC is not a non-profit organization.  They are a for profit.  Just like any other business, if you spend more than you can bring in you will not be in business for much longer.  Yes it's only an idea, but people have to realize that for every idea, there is someone behind it that must be paid to carry out the work.  If that can't happen due to budget constraints and a falling economy then all of the ideas in the world remain just that.  Ideas.

DP3, Your talking like you already know that $5 isn't enough. I realize $5 that may not be enough but there are no award scores, no book averages (just online averages), no verification of any sort. The maintaining of averages can almost be fully automatic. And don't forget, now the USBC has the names and addresses of open bowlers that they can target to try and draw in to regular league bowling.

Spider, you could just quit leagues and even save the $5. Why would you even want a fun card if you just want to bowl at your convenience?

I would be real surprised if someone at the USBC didn't already think of this but would be curious why they didn't persue it.

Hey, sooner or later something has to happen or when all us babyboomers retire from bowling there won't be anybody left.

Topless Summer Leagues Male & Female, thong's are optional! But back on Topic: We no longer live in a Fun, Family driven state of mind, we live in a time when $$$ brings bowlers in, Big money making opportunities is what puts people on the lanes now days, thanks to the ABC/USBC opening Pandora's box with virtually no limitations on what a Ball company can release to the Public, Bowling is no longer associated with Skill, now days it's just an Expensive game with very little return on your investment, in today's economy, that's where we are!

Like I said Moon it is a good idea to an extent. There are many centers that do have computers to do something like this. Even for the ones that do most of them are in an office and not at the front desk. For your plan to work all centers would need to have a computer right at the front desk. As stated earlier who at USBC would take care of everything. Now I know you said it is just done online but you still need to have somebody to make sure everything is updated and accurate. I can see this being a major headache, don't get me wrong I think it is a great idea to get started off of.

sd, That's all I was doing was throwing it out there so maybe other people would chip in ideas of their own. When I started thinking about this I began wondering if the USBC is even interested in trying to attract new bowlers. There's nothing they have done that I know of (could be wrong here). Maybe their business model is to just increase the dues as people drop out. I'd hate to be the last guy left.

I understand what you are thinking about. I had similar ideas when I was working at a center back in Sioux Falls. I have often thought about having more 3 person team leagues myself.
