What if Traber lost weight?
« on: February 25, 2007, 03:09:45 PM »
Not to rip on the guy at all: don't get any bad impressions.  I'm just wondering if his balance, and therefore his game, might improve if he were to lose weight.  What's your opinion on this issue?

Jim, I have said this same thing in a few other threads.  If he lost weight, people would still complain if he made a show for some other reason.  If you don't have 400+ rpm and can't play inside and aren't between 140-220 lbs and right handed somewhere between 5'9" - 6'2" the armchair keglers on this board will complain, plain and simple.

quote:
Man I am so tired about reading all the Traber fat posts. WHO cares if he is fat.. He does have a different style but he an exempt bowler on the PBA tour and has 30 something regional titles... I bet thats a resume alot of the Dale Traber bashers would like to have..

The guy (Mineman)that won yesterday will not get many style points either, but he won a PBA tournament..

Oh yea, I am not vene gonna waste my breath commenting on the poster that said:
"He wins, but he's not that good" I was just curious how many regional titles that poster has??

I won't.  I don't care how many revs they get on the ball.

A few years back at the U.S open he averaged close to 250 for a block playing 5th arrow. He has an ABC eagle and we all know the only place to score is straight up 10. LOL.Why is it when Norm Duke or Barnes pipes it up ten they are awewsome and when someone else does it they suck??????????

Back to the original topic/question...it is also entirely possible that there would be problems maintaining the success with a significant loss of weight.  Not everyone who has to potentially undo 20 or so years of a particular style fares well with a new style even if it is just minor tweaks to the game to adjust for something like loss of weight.

As to style...who cares?  There are lots of people who can hook the lane but don't do anything with it in terms of wins.  Given the choice of classic style or 35 regional banners and a handful of TV shows, I would gladly step to the line for the banners and shows.  It isn't the style that gets the job done- it is the consistency with which one plies that style, and say what you will about the Brothers Traber, WRW, Haugen, the Brothers Scroggins and a host of others- if they are nothing else, they are generally consistent.

I'm with you on this one.  His style works for him, and at this point it probably wouldn't help to change it.  When I asked the question my main thought was if losing weight would improve his balance, mechanics, etc.  I wasn't really thinking about changing style altogether, just whether or not his bowling would improve within his already defined style.

Dale Trabor may be a nice guy and he obviously has succeeded in bowling. For that he should be credited, but there are those people out there who hate watching him bowl. There is nothing wrong with saying you can't stand the way he throws the ball or the way he looks doing it. You can hate watching the guy while knowing he probably would beat you 9 times out of 10....just because a guy is better than me doesn't mean I have any interest in him or his game.

Yeah I think the difference is between saying that you don't like the way he bowls and saying that he sucks when he just made it to the semi-finals this weekend.

I hope the guy makes more shows just so I can see more whacked out, crazy threads like this one.  You guys ever see Crag Stadler golf?  How about Butterbean box?  If a guy can get the job done looking like that, more power to him.  What do you want to do, start a weight requirement on tour?  Where would we set it?  Low enough to do away with Couch, PA, and other great bowlers?  I'm sure everyone here is the picture of slimness, I know from my personal experience that is FAR from the case.  So you fat guys out there (myself included), if you got on tour you'd go on some huge weight loss regimen?  Yeah, right...

Mr. Lebowski, this is Bill Salnicker with the Southern Cal Bowling League, and I just got a, an informal report, that a member of your team, uh, Walter Sobchak, drew a firearm during league play. If this is true of course, it contravenes a number of the league's by-laws, and article 27 of the league...

To address the question: yes, a healthier weight would likely help his game.

As for asthetics: I don't like watching him bowl and I see many people who I don't consider bowlers, but people who fling, shove, drop, etc.. the ball and it hits the pins.

That being said, there are no "style points" in bowling so who really gives a flip.

It seems to me that in other sports people are amazed by a overweight person with skills or athletic ability and those guys are celebrated. Football (The Fridge), Basketball (Sir Charles), Baseball (Babe Ruth, Tony Gywnn, David Wells), for example. But in bowling, which has a negative image (non-athletic beer drinkers) already, the fit person are the ones looked at with amazement. I'm in agreement with the poster who lauded Traber's skills, but didn't want to look at that belly on TV.

Someone may have stated this earlier in this  thread.  If so, pardon me.

I remember when the Traber brothers looked about the same - both overweight, but not as dramatically as Dale is now.  They both throw the ball about the same.  Now Dave has slimmed down quite a bit - I think the weight he lost was picked up by Dale.  I don't notice Dave winning a lot of national  tournaments, even though he bowls much more  than Dale.  So, perhaps one might conclude that the weight is a non-issue?  I don't know.  I do know that  both are limited in their chances by the fact that only a small number of conditions fit their chosen style.  I'd think Dale  might want to lose some weight just for health reasons.

A) my wife saw him and said he was "her" picture of bowlers in America and a alot of her friends(who don't think bowling is much of a sport).
SAD.

B)I actually liked Mike Mineman's style at least for his drive out to his mark with his armswing.  Very positive.

C)...no style points in bowling....hmmmm...  As a fella lucky enough to bowl with the great Hall of famer Dave Davis who seemed to rack up a passal of major titles in comparision to his total titles.  I believed it was his belief that his great form....great natural free speed, a long flat spot, great balance and leverage at the line(ball close to ankle) and perfectly positioned slide foot at the foul line.  Was his trump card...His ace in the hole so to speak...that allowed him on tougher tournament conditions to take the lane out of the equation in comparison to other bowlers and allowed him to really perform well on these types of shots.  (this continued into his late 50s until the senior tour of the time disappeared).

It was during this association that I was able to absorb a couple of these principles and put them to work to exceed what others thought possible and to meet all my expectations for a very brief period of time.  I am no longer that bowler or that fit individual with form I enjoyed feeling and seeing on tape!
BUT for a brief space of time.

Note...Dave spent 45 minutes at the beginning of EACH practice session since 1957 working only on form and almost not watching the pins fall.  I think that he would say there ARE style points in bowling to certain extent!

REGards,

Luckylefty
PS I applaud Dale Traber's many many regional titles and wonder what he could achieve with even more fitness!

Im sure his balance would improve, but at the same time it could mess him up. Think about it....

Dale Traber has mastered his own girth meaning that he gets all his wieght behind his ball therefore the wieght contributes to his power game, Taking the wieght away may alter that power and his balance.
