"Tournament" balls...

So does anyone have balls that they really only use for tournaments, what are they, and why?

I have my THS balls with all with the same layout.  But Longer pin to pap balls I own with particle pearl covers from Lane master quickly became my favorite. And hyroad is another ball I cashed with.

The Two PP cover balls both have their own shape but not the "skid snap" reactions associated with "pearl".... I get the length, controllable reaction, and the heavy continuous hit. From really long patterns to medium, these balls helped me stay in the game - except last tourney. I can't bowl with elevation sickness lol

I have a DV8 Grudge that I keep in the bag only for tournaments, it's set up 45 x 3 3/8" x 40, P3 x-hole. When I need it for a flood, I REALLY need it. I also keep a Brunswick Melee Jab for tournaments, 45 x 4.5" x 60, no x-hole. Pin down, smooth rolling symmetrical core ball, gotta have it in my tournament bag. Neither ball sees league play.

Bowled a very tough doubles tournament today and got blown out the water. While much was me and not the ball, I can't say I felt comfortable using anything I had. 42 foot flat pattern. I'm reconsidering how I approach future purchases. Thinking of keeping a ball or two for tournament only. Seriously considering the 900G X, keep it aside for tournaments only so it stays fresh.

I have 3 sets of equipment

Equipment i use for leauge, which i also use in tournaments that i know ahead of time are having a house shout, or patterns between 38 and 44 feet.

Equipment for patterns 37 feet or shorter

and equipment for 45 feet and longer.

I have a Venator Evolution I use primarily in league because it doesn't fit with the rest of my current arsenal. Other than that I use all my gear in both leagues and tournaments.

I prioritize my low game, single drilled equipment for tournaments and adjust as needed. I keep a 3 ball bag with older equipment/covers as 2 of the 3 nights that I bowl, they only put out 20ft of head oil on top of whatever was there from the morning's strip and re-oil.

When I bowl tournaments, mostly challenge & PBA patterns, you need newer/stronger covers to read those higher than house shot volumes.

To me, my tournament ball has always been my "go to" league ball.  The Gamebreaker 2 is always very consistent and it never over reacts.  If I need more strength, I ball up to the Scandal which is another consistent but strong rolling piece.

It depends on the length of the tournament pattern. The longer the pattern, I need faster response down lane, so I look to my Dreams or a Network. If those are too much off the spot, I'll ball down to a Black Ops. Then to a Night Hawk SE, then to a Boost. If I need to ball down from there, there's a Desert Hook and Booyah in the bag.

I'll be testing my Torch, Incinerate and Drift this week, hopefully.

I don't really have an answer to this cuz it changes based on lame surface and sometimes pattern.

Spme of my best tournament balls are also good in league.  Old cobalt vibe and IQ solid have been better in tourneys.   Tour 30 and alpha crux have been good on both but are much more length dpecific on flatter patterns

For me, tournament balls are balls that don't work on my THS.  I don't necessarily reserve them because they work only on tournament conditions, but because they don't work on THS.  Could be anything.

There is enough money in league side pots and brackets that I don't hold back because a ball is so good it should only be used in tournaments.  Use the ball that provides you the best look and highest scores.

Besides, my odds of winning league side action is many times better than winning a tournament.  Plus, I can always buy another with bracket money.

This is my mindset 100%. I put up $25 a week in side pots in my competitive league or top of the $20 to bowl. I'm giving myself the best chance to win. My best balls are coming out anytime money is on the line (or when I'm practicing on a pattern in preparation for money being on the line).

To be fair, I also bowl in 2 non-competitive leagues with no side pot action. For those leagues, I'll bring the B team to save some wear and tear on the better balls. The B team tends to be balls that I bought second hand out of curiosity or balls with layouts I wanted to try but didn't care for much. These are typically my balls for general practice as well.
