What is your benchmark ball?
« on: April 21, 2010, 03:48:30 AM »
I love this topic and I think it's important to talk about.  Many of us understand it but I thought I'd put it into words.
Here's my short version.

The benchmark is:

   1. The standard by which all other equipment is measured
   2. It's the ball that you take out to "read" the lanes.
   3. It's the ball that you use to decide which ball you will use to start.
   4. It's the ball that is your most versatile piece of equipment.
   5. It's the ball that transitions through the 3 phases - skid, hook, roll - smoothly.
   6. If you only could have one ball, it should be this ball.
   7. It should be the ball that you build your arsenal around.

Let me know what you think!

For the fun part, what is your benchmark ball right now?
Mine happens to be a Storm Furious.  I can generally get a good read on what's happening with the lanes.  I have equipment above and below it for my arsenal.  I used to love my V2 as the benchmark as it was even smoother than the Furious, but it's time to move on...

I'm sure you get this a lot, but I love how the guy that has Brunswick in his name relies on Storm equipment.

LOL just don't feel like changing my screen name. I used to be a huge Brunswick guy for most of my life. That was up until about a year ago. I had bought a Storm T-Road Pearl and a Brunswick Punisher at the same time back in 2006. I found that the Punisher was extremely too much or too little when the T-Road Pearl was working without any problems at any time. I then picked up another storm ball and have been hooked since.

I get that sometimes but I don't care, I think it's funny.

My Pluto is my benchmark ball.  It reads the lane condition & lets me know where to line up as well as knowing if it is the right ball for the lane condition.  I can also use my HyRoad for a benchmark ball.

Brunswick Wild Thing drilled on a modified version of the Rico pattern.

My PAP is 5.5" straight across. For this ball I lined everything up just like the normal Rico pattern then shifted my center grip line an inch to the left. Making the ball a little more leveraged and putting the pin 4.5" from my PAP.

The ball rolls great. Has a little sooner roll with more continuation on the backend. Great ball for stroking up the right side of the lane.

Is a great judge for if the are a little drier I can move in with it, or a little heavier oil I can usually keep the same line and slow my ball speed down for a very solid reaction. Very  very versatile ball that I'm glad I bought and will probably get a back up to have for later.

Makes a very consistent read on the lane and helps me decide if I want to make adjustments to keep using it or change to something stronger or weaker.

I use the 900 Global Breakout as my benchmark, my backup is my Roto Grip Grand Illusion.
