What is my entering average?
« on: July 26, 2007, 03:43:20 AM »
I've decided to bowl the next season in another center. I will be playing in 2 leagues where they make up teams according to last season's averages to make more or less even teams.  My problem is that lane conditions appear to be easier in the new center because as a sub in that center last year, I averaged 193 for 40 games while my best average at the other center was 184 at the end of the season. Of course, as a sub, averages might tend to be higher because you play with no stress. What should I say my average is, 184, 193 or somewhere in between?

the average book will come out and your average shoudl be the 193 because you have over 21 games with this average.

If you don't have an average for that league, they'll probably take your book average, which will be your highest average for more then 21 games.  Even if you are a sub, you've got 40 games and that average will probably be used.

That has to be the worst way to do a league that ive ever seen.  Most leagues r handicap anyway, why would u take away someones ability to bowl with their friends, just because of averages.

There is no way i would do that, with my luck i would get stuck with that 1 guy that every league seems to have.  Averages about 140, obviously isnt very good at all, but still seems to be surprized by his crappiness with every shot, cussing & throwing a fit all the time.

Where is this league, Communist China? How can you take away your right to put together your own teams? I would never bowl in a league like that.

Sometimes its called a draft league and have been in a few leagues that were pretty good like that. Usually in my area they did that with couples leagues so if a couple missed a night you weren't missing half the team or having domestic squables. (4person) I don't like it as much as setting your own teams but it was ok.

Your high book average will be used unless your new league has a rule that would supercede it.

For example, I used to bowl in a league that said if you subbed for at least 2/3 of the league nights the previous year, then you'd use that average (just as if you were a regular bowler in that league), regardless of what your high book average said.

The reason teams are made up is that no handicap points are given during play. However, it is permissible for a group of friends to bowl together as long as their combined averages do not surpass a maximum which is based on the averages of the individual members of the league.

Capped Scratch

It's refreshing to hear there are still some leagues attempting it. In most cases, capped scratch is a superior alternative to handicap, but most bowlers are afraid of it.

Someone tried to tell me that even though a summer league is over 21 games, that if your high average from this summer is your highest average you still use your highest fall average instead?

Summer leagues don't usually "count" when determining book averages.  For one thing, the books (literal record books) are done during the summer and there isn't necessarily a final summer average to be recorded yet.  If you waited until all summer leagues were finished, you couldn't get the books out until after the fall leagues started.

Also, many houses change the shot during the summertime.  Fewer leagues, more nights without leagues, and more plastic ball open bowling usually means less people bitcaing about the shot, so they can get away with oiling every other day or with less oil on the days they do oil.  Some summer leagues will use last summer's average in place of a book average, but for the most part, summer league averages are ignored.

I've never heard of requiring 2/3 of the season's games for an average to be recorded in the books.  The USBC requires 21 games for an average to be recorded.  Most leagues require some fraction of of the total number of games to qualify for special awards like most improved, high average, and high game/series awards.  The high series in our association, 843, was recorded by a guy who came in to sub.  Set a 281 average.  Didn't get called back for the rest of the year.

Many leagues in my home center uses averages in the following order:
1)Winter Book from the same league with a min number of game, 60 I believe
2)House book with a minimum number of games, generally 40 games
3)High Winter Book (21 games minimum)
4)Summer book (even though there is not an official book put together for the summer, averages are compiled and can be found by contacting your locl association or checking bowl.com)
5) 2 Year Winter Book

Then there is always the "If none of the above use " and based on the league a number is inserted, usually the vacant score used by the league.

The league and house book are used whether you were a regular paying member or a sub as long as you meet the games requirement.

My sport league gets really detailed and there is a long line of succession to try to make it fair for new members who do not have a sport average.
