finger pain
« on: May 27, 2010, 04:01:51 PM »
I recently have been having pain in my middle finger at the 1st knuckle(basically where you place a pen or pencil when writing).  I also have a decent size bump there.  I currently have 1/4 reverse in my fingers.  Any ideas on what I could be doing to cause the pain? Would a change in drilling help at all?  Not sure what other info I need to post.  Thanks.

B A T T
when is the last time you had your span and pitches checked?? as we get older you need to shorten your span some.. not saying 26 is old, but if you have been bowling since you were little preteens, it does wear and tear on the joints a tad.. as for the bump, is it on the pad of your finger or the top of your finger?? if it is on the pad and it is not a callous(spell check..lol..) you might want to check with your doctor as it could be a sist or a torn ligament..

It is on the back of my finger on the 1st knuckle.  After I bowl, the next day it is hard to make a fist without it hurting and it feels very sore and stiff.  Also hurts if i put any pressure on it, even writing with a pen made it hurt.  I was thinking it might be some kind of ligament tear.

same exact problem last season
my pro shop guy shortend my span from 4 7/8 x 5 to 4 3/4 x 4 7/8 and we changed pitches for both fingers and thumb (can't remember the numbers off hand)
redrilled everything I wanted to keep and bowled 2 leagues this past season with no pain whatsoever in my finger
definately worth looking into

Do you wear a glove while bowling? Does your finger hurt while bowling, or
only after bowling? Is it only in one ball or after using all balls?
Have you done anything different while not bowing?

I don''t wear a glove.  It hurts while I am bowling and afterwards, and it hurts with all of the balls.  Not really doing anything different.  I think it started when I dropped the ball at the line awhile ago.  I lost it off my thumb on the downswing and the ball hit the lane when my finger was in it.  But I have taken a month off and it still hurt when I started back up.

You may need to be re-fit, I had a similar problem and I changed the span and the pitches and have never been better.

If I still had the pain, I would be making an appointment with a doctor and not seeing if my measurements were correct.

Everything was fine up until this happened correct ?

Sounds like you jammed you finger while it was still in the ball as the ball hit the lane.  I would first try to ice it up for awhile and not bowl.  If you really must bowl, try wrapping some tape around the knuckle, but not too tight.  After all this, if it does not get better, then see your doctor.
