It has to do with hand position on the ball. When you release you can come around the outside of the ball, stay right up the back of it or turn it so that your hand is on the inside at the release. It helps to change the roll of the ball.

Yup. Imagine looking at a right-handed bowler from behind as the ball drops to the release point.

Being outside would mean that the bowler's hand is over to the right of the ball.

Being inside would mean the hand is over to the left of the ball....and thus as he releases the hand comes from the left to the right imparting more revs (and thus more power) as he comes "through" the ball.

Is there any video on this type of release ? That release sounds like a back up ball.

The rotation and angles are still the same, just instead of the hand being on the outside of the ball, it's behind it.

In the photo of the guy in the red shirt notice his hand position in relationship to the ball, this would be working the outside of the ball.

The other picture would be more of working the inside of the ball. These are the closest pictures I could find, and may not be exact but they are pretty close. I recently picked up Mark Bakers book and he has some nice illustrations in it.  And it was a great read also.
