What to aim at . . . .

Hey bowlers:
What do you aim at on every strike shot.   Dots?   Arrows?   Or Break point?

Well for me I look two boards to the left of the board I WANT to hit. I’m left-handed but right eye dominate. So with that said I would normally look at board 8 to hit the second arrow (board 10). But, that isn’t all. I also then target to my breakpoint. I connect the dots so to speak. If my breakpoint is board 8 then I would follow through to that point once I release the ball.

I play a similar line for a righty.  I look right between first and second arrow, but figure a few boards wiggle room.  I always throw right about 2 boards where I am looking, so while looking to throw 8 or 9, I will hit 6 or 7.  I also make sure to watch the breakpoint carefully, and make sure I am hitting it at the same spot with correct angle.

On spares, I used to target arrow but struggled with accuracy on single pin spares.  After getting a tip on here to look at the pin itself, I have been MUCH more accurate, and by keeping my eyes locked on I will see if my follow through is proper.  I know right away if I will make the spare.

I use to look at the pin for single pin pick ups, now i look at the arrows, its helped. But for my strike shot, i usually look at which arrow i wanna throw it over. But, this topic has given me a new idea.. Maybe i should close one of my eyes when i bowl, and see if thats helps accuracy.

I’ll try to explain how I do it.

Pick a spot out on a wall about 10’ away. Focus on it with both eyes open.

Extend both arms fully out in front of you. Have the back on both hands facing you with your thumbs to the inside.

Now bring both hands together making a small diamond shaped hole with your thumbs & index fingers.

Raise your hands up to eye level while still looking at the spot with both eyes open.

Once you see the spot close one of your eyes. If you can see the spot that is the dominate eye. If the spot disappears, the other eye is the dominate one.

Try this channel surfer.

Extend both hands forward of your body and place the hands together making a small triangle (approximately 1/2 to 3/4 inch per side) between your thumbs and the first knuckle.
With both eyes open, look through the triangle and center something such as a doorknob or the bullseye of a target in the triangle.
Close your left eye. If the object remains in view, you are right eye dominant. If your hands appear to move off the object and move to the left, then you are left eye dominant.

To validate the first test, look through the triangle and center the object again with both eyes open.
Close your right eye. If the object remains in view, you are left eye dominant. If your hands appear to move off the object and move to the right, then you are right eye dominant.

Hey Scotts,
when I do your test, I see 2 holes in my hand instead of one. I close my right eye, look through the hole on the right, and it doesn't move. I look through the hole on the left and close my right eye and object doesn't move. Am I doing something wrong or are my eyes even with none dominant?

in reply to the original question, I have done both arrow method and breakpoint method. The more I have to swing the shot, the more I use the breakpoint. If the shot is a down and in shot then I target the 2nd or 1st arrow.

NY Bowler--Are you forming a small triangle with your hands closed looking thru the aperature that is formed?  If you follow directions your dominant eye should be easily found.

If it isn't working using Scotts 33's method, then you aren't doing it right.

I draw a line on the lane I want my ball path to follow and look at those points at the arrows and the breakpoint.

Ron C describes this on his website and I believe its tips number 17,18,19
