Equipment Selection Suggestions...
« on: August 21, 2005, 02:19:01 PM »
Hey everyone.  I'm getting ready to punch up a couple news balls for the upcoming season.  Just when I thought I had it all figured out, the latest issue on BTM arrives and throws a wrench in everything.. so I want to find out what everyone else thinks (stats are in my profile)...
Here's my problem.  I'm looking for a ball to cover medium and medium dry conditions.  Generally for these conditions, I like equipment with extra length and smooth backend reaction.  For the last two years, I had been using a polished Neo-Tac Khameleon.  The ball was strong enough that I was able to play inside when the lanes broke down, but still able to get down the lane and not over react.
I had pretty well decided on a Visionary AMB pearl as a replacement (with a control drill to tame down the backend reaction).  But, as I stated above, the new BTM shows up and included are Big B smokin' inferno and Morich sahara.  The smokin inferno had very similar numbers to the AMB pearl (same total hook, little more length and a little more backend), but received better ratings (see below).  The Sahara is a little weaker everywhere overall, but comparable....
Ratings:  Heavy     Medium     Dry

AMB       6/6/5     9/9/9      4/5/4

Smokin    5/5/5     9/9.5/9.5  8/8/8

Sahara    3/4/4     5/6/7      9/9/9.5

So my question is... if you were to choose a medium-dry lane ball, for my stats, which would you choose?  My only drawback with going with Brunswick (and therefor Morich as well) is the new sticker on the bottom of their boxes, "Hecho en Mexico."  Strangely, I'm feeling drawn to the Sahara for some reason though....  Comments, suggestions, etc are appreciated.

THANKS!

I might lean towards something like the Violet Gargoyle.  Solid cover, more than medium RG, fairly low differential...  Drilled somewhat weak and finely sanded (1500-2000 grit, no polish), it should give you the length you want without over reacting on the backends.

For medium to dry conditions, with head oil, I would say the Red Pin Zone Classic.  It works very well on this condition and the price is right at 65 plus ship from buddies.
