Ball choice?
« on: September 25, 2009, 11:39:33 PM »
Looking at a ball to complete my arsenal..  conditions at the main house I bowl league are drastically different this year, the shot plays very tight with flying backends.  I have the following balls in my bag Roto Grip Grand Illusion, Storm Sure Fire, and spare ball.  Visited with my Pro Shop and the following are the suggestions he made:  Hammer Burn, Hammer Green Vibe, Brunswick Swarm and Track Temper.

I am looking for a reaction that will give some length with a controlled backend.

I am a tweener throw 15-16 mph with medium revs.

Out of the 4 balls I am just looking for some thoughts.

Thanks,

Mark

maybe the Motive equipment.  Seems to have a lot of control and fairly long.

I kinda bowl out a house like yours, probaly not really tight but flying back ends.  I see alot of the Green vibe and Hammer Burns.  Both look great but for me if its tight I would say the burn.  Cool looking ball too.

Roto Grip and Storm why throw anything else!

I''m kind of confused by 2 things:
1. When you say the lanes are "tight". To me that means lots of oil or a flatter oil pattern. Yet all the suggested balls are medium oil pearls with very strong backends.

2. You say the back ends are flying, yet your pro shop suggests balls with large, snappy backends/breakpoints. They seem inappropriate, unless I am missing some part of the picture.

It seems that the SureFire, a solid/pearl combo with a very smooth, 4000 Abralon surface, should be ideal for the condition you''re facing. Have you drilled it to be snappy or polished it, that it is not working well on the condition you described????

I agree with GetOffMe10Pin that the Psycho would be much better for what you SEEM TO HAVE DESCRIBED than the Burn, but the SureFire should already be the almost perfect ball. The Motiv SX-1 can have a similar reaction to the SureFire,as a possible solution also.

I appreciate the feed back, what I mean when I say tight may very well be different than your definition  (yes there is plenty of oil up front, just a lot of backend), my Sure Fire is drilled pin up at 4000 abralon with polish, I am having trouble with the Sure Fire with particular drill coming back to hard and blowing through the pocket at high flush and have been leaving some 4-9 splits. This drilling is spot on at the other house I bowl at so I am not looking to change the ball or its surface at this time.  I will take a look at the Pshyco and visit with my Proshop about it this next week.

Thanks for the replies.

Shame you can't change it. Due to the design nature of that ball, I think it could be perfect for what you need at its stock surface of 4000 grit Abralon matter finish. I'd STILL strongly urge you to look for a ball of that nature: Gladiator Pearl, Terminator Rebellion, Ogre Pearl, Avalanche Pearl (the new Green/Black), Blue Vibe, and the like.
