Opinions on ball company staffers
« on: August 20, 2013, 03:53:10 PM »
I'm considering applying for a staff position with Seismic.  However, I was curious what people thought.  Does someone being on a staff give any more or less weight to their opinions?  And being that I'm already in a pro shop, does also being on a staff really affect what you think of them or their opinions?

The way I see it, the answer could go either way.  Yes, because if someone is good enough to be on staff, they most likely know what they're doing or talking about, or at the very least they're educated about that specific company's equipment.  However, I also know some staffers, some are technically knowledgeable, but aren't that great of bowlers, so how do I know that they know how to correctly read ball reaction?  But again, some guys are great bowlers, but they have zero clue what the numbers are or how the ball is laid out.

And also no, because if they're on staff, they're going to push that company.  How do I know if another ball or company wouldn't be a better fit for me, and that they aren't just trying to talk me into something their company makes?

Since I'm already in a pro shop and don't have any bias or any reason to sell one ball over the other, I sell people the ball that I think best fits them and their needs or wants.  I'd do the same if I was on staff, but how does that look to the customer?  Thanks for the replies in advance.
What would you be if you were attached to another object by an inclined plane, wrapped helically around an axis?

Its just me personally, but when it comes to staffers I tend to take anything they say with a grain  of salt. I'm sure most of the guys that post here and on other sites are all great guys and bowlers, but everything is the next great thing, or super awesome.

Granted some of that may be because I've always dealt with independent pro shops who didn't try and push you towards one line or the other. I tend not to believe or trust a whole lot of anything that comes out of someones mouth who is part of a single product line, and you would need to prove to me that you weren't just pushing the brand of your choice but rather what you actually thought would fit me best.

Now if you already work in one, and people know you, that may not be a huge issue. It may actually help because everyone thinks you are good enough to get on a staff.

Yeah I'm not sure its one of those things that has a black and white answer.

If you want to be on a ball staff the first thing you shouldn't do is post that you aren't going to push the brand that you represent.

There's a difference between not pushing a brand and selling within reason.  We have no Seismic in this area.  I really like the equipment enough to make a case with my manager and the owner to order them and put them on the wall of all SIX shops we have, none of which have ever seen Seismic.  I have a responsibility to sell the customer the best ball for them.  I'm not going to sell them a Seismic ball when I think a Storm ball would suit them better, because if I do, and they don't like it, it looks bad on me, on the brand, and on the shop.  I'm putting their brand in our market, and protecting it at the same time by not recklessly pushing it regardless of the situation.  I feel that's being responsible.  Seismic reaction does have a place in this area, I've been very happy with it, and that's why I want to be on their staff and sell their equipment.  I'll push it definitely, but not at the expense of turning someone off, and giving myself, the brand, or the shop a bad name.
