Title: When will I learn...?
Post by: lilpossum1 on January 12, 2018, 05:16:52 PM
Every season, I get some idea into my head that I have what it takes to develop a significantly higher rev rate. Every year, around this time in the middle of the season, I try to bring it up, and only successfully shoot myself in the foot. I might bring it up a little, but my consistency goes to hell and I wear out faster. Granted I am trying to do this with feel and don't have an accessable coach. But this higher rev game is not for me. Any tips for getting this terrible idea out of my head?

Focus on a soft, open hand release to try to not do so much

"but my consistency goes to hell and I wear out faster."

There is your answer.

As for more revs, less is more.

You can work on your rotation and hook it from two arrows deeper with less physical effort.

Solid footwork, timming and a clean release the pic the ball and layout that works for you.

Duh!! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^What he said!! I had league this morning. I am rev-dominant. I shot a 558 set and was totally frustrated. I pinged the pocket all day long and all I got was corners....ten pins and seven pins.

Because I was so frustrated I stayed after and waited for the next league to come in. Figured I'd work on throwing with a softer hand then usual, because that was my "old"style before I went rev-dominant.

With a softer hand I shoot 256-224-238=718.  NUFF SAID!

Revs should come naturally from as effortless, smooth and efficient approach and swing possible.  Surest way to kill revs is try to increase them by muscling.

As a fairly speed dominant lefty, I too go through phases of wanting more revs.  However, I find that for me it’s very been effective to understand proper ball motion and concentrate on that.

Skid-hook-roll.

Getting the transitions right and matching up to the lanes is tantamount to success.

HEAVY forward roll is more important than "REVS".  Try to hand your to come up the back of the ball faster. The better the forward roll, the less deflection when the ball hits the pins. That's what "Revs"  are all about.

Sounds like me to a tee. Could someone explain more what is meant by "slow hand" (no references to Eric Clapton please ). I don't have a lot of revs so I have been trying to open my hand more on my back swing.

Slow/Soft hand, essentially not to over-hit on the ball. You don't want to do too much in your release, you want to keep it simple

Sorry, meant soft not slow. Been trying to open my hand up on the back swing kind of like Pete Weber (I know I will never be able to duplicate it) but I have to remember that if I open it up at the top I have to make sure I close it at the bottom.

Don't know about slow hand. I let the ball fall from my backswing to the side of my foot keeping it as low as I can then my release gets fast as I get the thumb out fast and don't hit on it all while giving it projection to my mark. hand is behind the ball from the back swing to the bottom and I don't even think about coming around the ball but playing up the boards to swinging it I just seem to naturally change my axis rotation to match the shot.
thing I noticed...
when I hit on reactive it gives a longer inconsistent skid and break point.
Sanded urethane seems to like to get spanked.
the less hit on the ball at release the more revs you will see but key is stay behind the ball and get that thumb out fast.
I also noticed a rev increase using the blue Turbo release tape on the back of my thumb. I really think fitting tape and release tape is the way to go.

Each of us has a "natural" rev rate range.  You will optimize yours with good footwork, timing, and not muscling the arm swing and release.  You will need to relax "upstairs" and trust yourself.
Forget what others do to the ball and focus on what you do effectively.  If you can't repeat it quit trying to do it.

Revs are good if you keep your axis rotation down.

You cant have a ton of revs and a ton of axis rotation, its a horrible match. This is a great point. Look at the guys on top now, ton of RPMs, but the ball is going forward and their balls hit like absolute bombs.

I believe it is human nature to believe that you need more effort to achieve more revs, power, etc.

The truth in many cases is that the additional effort actually reduces power.

Relaxed swings in golf, baseball, tennis, etc all provide more effortless power.

That is why in stress situations you need to get the body to relax and let that effortless power come out.

Hmm I wonder if that's why they sell alcohol at bowling alleys  ;D
