Axis Tilt Strategies & dry lane conditions -- Anyone?
« on: September 21, 2005, 05:50:43 AM »
In order to improve my ability to "score better" on dryer conditions, I currently bowl in a second shift late league and usually by that time, if the lanes haven't already broken down -- they most surely are at the beginning of the second game.  My primary ball for that league is a pearlized Columbia Scout drilled to go long and snap on the backend and I keep it clean & highly polished every week.  I would like to know from those who've had considerable success with applying increasing or decreasing amounts of axis tilt (to get more ball length prior to the breakpoint) during their releases when they have had to play deeper inside the 4th arrow in order to find fresh oil after the shot outside the 3rd arrow is burned up.  I am right handed and I am a stroker/power stroker -- I do not loft and my ideal laydown point is between the dots and the arrows.  I don't wear any wrist supports.  In particular, does anyone "knowingly" have "specific" degrees of tilt tips when moving deep inside?

P.S.  I use the word "knowingly" because I know that a lot of "naturals" out there probably adjust their tilt without even thinking about it -- But, I like to study the  mechanics of our sport and have had good success in adding tools to "my" game after I do sufficient analysis/practice and gain a better understanding of a particular skill.

Thanks!

Playing a deep inside line for me usually means that I should curl or at least tuck my pinky finger, spread out my index finger as much as I can, and do one of two things with my wrist:

A) Keep wrist cocked and hand directly underneath ball if there is alot of head oil and you just need to tilt the ball enough to kick out the corners

B) Cock wrist and put hand completely on side of ball if you need more skid through the heads.

The main thing is to stay relaxed and don't try to turn the ball any more than normal. If you do you'll just end up either coming up the back of it and it will hit light, or you'll spin the ball and it may miss the breakpoint completely.
