Trying to find out which bowling shammy to purchase. I dont have a favorite bowling company, just want to get the best one. Thank you.

My personal go to is made by Genesis Bowling. It's the Pure Ultra Performance pad. Nothing I have used works as well. You can find them most places for about $15.

Same here. I tried a few of the thinner ones, and they were pretty useless after the first cleaning. The Pure Pad works great.

Good topic, but let me see if I read this right. I've had three pads already, 1 from Brunswick and two from Buddies. All were in my humble opinion greatly reduced after first cleaning. Of course, without seeing them, they all look alike. Are you guys saying the Pure Pad is thicker and that it bounces back after a cleaning? That's huge to me, because I thought they were all the same.....

The Pure Pad is definitely thicker. After my experience with the Master and Storm pads, I was afraid to clean my Pure Pad. But to my surprise the Pure Pad returned to it's original state.
I think the Pure Pad is a different kind of leather than the others. In any case it's a superior pad.

I have the red Roto Grip shammy and it's alright. Definite change after the first cleaning, and there's quite a bit of red dye that bleeds into the water, but it still works. I might go back to a microfiber towel though. Even when new I don't think there was a significant improvement going to the shammy and I like bigger towels better.

THE GREY MASTER PAD IS THE BEST OUT OF ALL THE STORM/ROTO COLORS!!!! DOESNT STICK TO THE BALL!!! I LOVE IT!!! JUST GOT IT AT NATIONALS!!!

My Gray Master Pad stiffened up after I washed it. It didn't absorb the same after the cleaning.
Now, maybe I did something wrong. Still, I followed instructions and allowed the towel to dry slowly out of direct sunlight to avoid the leather drying out. The bottom line is that the pad no longer absorbed like it did new. So far, My Pure Pad is holding up much better.

I had the Master Gray Wipe-It Dry Pad and it got all the dirt off the ball. However, I was not a fan of how dirty it got me and my hands after wiping a ball down. I know the dirt's got to go somewhere...just not a fan of it being indirectly going from the ball to pad to my hands. And like others have said, it was not the same after washing.
I just started using the Genesis Pure Pad and so far it has exceeded my expectations after my experience with the Master pad. I think it is the better pad so far but I have not washed it yet...

I love my Genesis Pure Pad. I do wash and clean it often and you would be amazed of all the oil that comes out during the wash hand process.

I recently got the new Genesis baseball shammy. I wouldn't recommend it...the baseball side is slippery and very hard to hold on to while cleaning the ball.

I use Dawn and warm water. I scrub the shammy with a nail brush. Works great!

I've cleaned my bowlingball.com leather shammy with warm water and hand soap and a nylon suede brush and it's fine.
You have to treat it like a car chamois, you got to use a very mild soap. Don't use dish soaps (like dawn), laundry detergents, chemicals , alcohol or you'll remove the natural oils from the leather. A Chamois usually get stiff because they get too dry and the loss of the natural oils in the leather.
I washed mine by hand with a hand soap and gently scrubbed it with the brush, then rinsed it thoroughly and squeezed/wrung it dry. I then stretched it out and clipped it to a coat hanger and let it air dry. Don't put it in the sun, UV is bad for it.

Noted! I guess that is why mine seems to be stiff after cleaning. It does soften up after use. I will use regular soap next time! Thanks!

I use Buddies Pro Shop shammy for $9.95; after about 6 months I chuck it out and buy a new one. I'm not wasting my time scrubbing that thing!

I too use the Genesis pad and have cleaned it several times. I use pretty warm water, a little bit of lemon juice, and soak the pad for several minutes outside in the sun. Then light up my happy stick, sipping on my woodford, while petting my doberman (not in that order) :D as we watch my kid blow bubbles.
HIBIKI Japanese whiskey sounds good right now though....

Since I bowl on so little oil, I rarely use my leather pad, but whenever I try to use it like any other towel, I can't. As soon as it makes contact with the surface of the ball, it stops dead from friction. It doesn't "wipe". I can just hold the ball with one hand and wipe with the towel in the other hand, like I do, standing next to the ball rack, having just picked up my ball.
So, is it only my doing something dumb (always possible) or what different method do you use to wipe a ball with this so very tacky leather pad?

THIS is true....
I bowl at two houses. At one house I use a damp mirco towel with Valentino on it. The house is lower volume and dirty. (for some reason, maybe it's just me, RX helps my ball get down lane :O ) )
At another house where flare rings cover the ball, the PURE PAD is very helpful. But it'll still grab on the ball on drier spots on the ball.

That friction that's stopping the ball dead, is basically forcing you to wipe the ball properly.
If you normally hold a regular towel in one hand and spin the ball on it with the other.
That's the bowler's version of a gunfighter twirling the gun on his finger. It's all for show, That's not cleaning the ball.
The tackiness of the leather is what makes it effective, That's why you have to wipe the ball with it.
Even with a microfiber towel, you should wipe the oil off and not depend on spinning the ball in the palm of your hand to do the oil removal properly.

why would anyone wipe clean a bowling ball like they are tossing a pizza dough.

No, I don't do the gunfighter's twirl. I usually look for the oil and then wipe the oil spots/slicks only. But the pad still sticks quite tenaciously. I really can't wipe with it; it just tried to force the ball to spin out of my grip.
I think I'd have to sit the ball on a cup or my lap and rub it manually, while holding it down to prevent it being spun by the pad. Next time I bowl, I'll have to try a different grip , maybe do it while seated.

It's a lot easier to use the shammy if you put your grip-sack between the shammy and your hand; it gives you more leverage to push the shammy around.

While this never occurred to me while using the pad, it does now because of this discussion:
Has anyone ever tried using an "Approved for Use during bowling" cleaning fluid with the pad, during bowling?
I'm not sure this is a good idea; just curious now, while this discussion is proceeding.

From all the stuff I've read your not supposed to use it with cleaners, cause it ruin the leather.
basically because of the same reason you don't use cleaners to clean the pad, because it breaks down the natural oils in the leather.

Got my Genesis Pure Pad yesterday. It's definitely thicker than others and and a bit smaller than anticipated. Can't find an answer on the website as to whether there's any difference in the sides (on mine gray/brown). I would assume not, but can't hurt to ask... Both sides are equal, yes?

I use the maroon side against the ball. The side with the logo is always against my hand. Never thought much about it but would probably work the other way too although the non-logo side has more of a deeper nap to it.

I'm the opposite, i use the logo side.... all this time I could of been doing all wrong... but the oil rings disappear anyway...

Just to make sure all options are covered, I've been using both sides of the Buddies and Brunswick.
I just watched the video... Whats up? He wiped using the NON Logo side of the Pure Pad and showed the results, as he says... "a nice difference" by showing us the LOGO side.... WTF?
I will say though, the non-logo pad is twice as thick as the logo pad stitched on, and the test did seem to show more removal than the other pads... Interesting.
On edit, I think I misinterpreted. When he says "nice difference", he wants us to look at the ball, not the spot on the pad. The logo side up is marketing..... Prolly my bad.

Just bought a chamois cloth out of the auto section on sale for like six bucks (big enough to cut into 2 good size wipes) and have to say it is also better than a microfiber for wiping down a ball. The smell is a bit funky and probably going to be a bear to clean without ruining it but so far impressed with it. The lane oil doesn't seem to dirty it too much and being leather it grabs that oil crazy good.

I ordered some Bickmore Saddle Soap Plus (as more a city dweller grateful to the country folks recommendations on Amazon lol) and have found it absolutely rocks for cleaning chamois cloth so I bet it would work really well on these leather based shammys as well. It cleans dirt and grime virtually on contact and removes oil but not enough to damage the leather.

Old thread but finally broke down and got myself a Genesis pad and wow well worth the $20. Used it for like at least 25 games (on strike ball, seldom wipe down spare) and its just now broke in but still looks pretty far from a first cleaning. I use both sides so that helps. Will use the saddle soap on it to see if that is strong enough when finally do clean because really helps preserve the leather. Got tired of chamois cloth I had getting dirty almost immediately. Cleaned up the chamois real good and now use as the final step when polishing balls. Much like car detailing it really excels at this.

Personally, I kinda gravitate towards the Storm deluxe shammy. I like being able to wear it like a mitt, and use the grey side during bowling. It has worked well, and is very easy to care for. A teammate of mine found the other storm shammy to be quite good as well. I suspect all are actually pretty close, so it really comes down to aesthetics on these and personal preference.

Yep nothing like it and already lost mine. Knew I was going to as had several people already remind me about leaving it behind. So small (made mistake of getting black one too) and I am so forgetful. Decided to go back to my chamois cloth as its almost as good but much harder to leave behind (big and yellowish) and if I lose it (decent chance) I am out half of $7 (cut big cloth in two) instead of $20.

I got my Genesis pad on ebay for $15. I basically get all my bowling accessories on ebay. Can save quite a bit.

So did I. Got it from seller: abetterproshop. Superb service. I also like the fact that when he posts new balls for sale he shows you the picture of the actual ball and all the specs. That way you can choose an asym with the CG shifted in the direction you like.
