I'm new to your board, so if I've posted this to the wrong forum, please let me know.

I am a USBC Silver Coach, and my partner is a USBC Gold Coach.  We are conducting research for an upcoming book, and would really appreciate your help.  We have posted a short survey consisting of 9 photos of a bowling ball entering the pins, and seek bowlers' opinions as to whether or not the shot is in the pocket, and whether or not you think it will carry.  The survey is completely anonymous.  At the end, you have the option of entering your email address for a chance to win a copy of the book (once published), or to receive notifications regarding the book.  We will not spam you nor sell your address.

We are not trying to determine where the pocket is with this survey.  Rather, we seek only the opinions of bowlers of different calibers.  If you threw the shot depicted in the photos, would you consider it to be in the pocket?  Would you expect a strike from that hit?

To be fair, the question was based on each individual person throwing their own bowling ball, would they think that "hit" should strike or not, for them, personally. The question isn't WILL it strike, but do you believe it's a pocket hit that should.

People are really OVER thinking this.

The more I read through peoples responses, the more I'm reminded of a South Park episode:

I agree with everyone pontificating in content (the incomplete info argument has merit), however, I did do the survey and really defaulted to what I would FEEL is the result to the photo as if I personally made the shot. 

Is the survey perfect?  No.  Is it how I would have done it?  No.  Will it yield the results OP is likely looking for?  Probably not, but the dude is at least putting forth effort, however misguided it may be.  We need to find some nobility in that.

Bottom line, there isn't ONE bowler alive that NEVER felt they were "robbed" on a "perceived" great shot. Everyone has struck when they didn't think they would, and everyone has left a single pin, when they thought they should've struck. To me, the questionnaire is more about perceived results and not at all about actual results.

...And to add, everyone's best hit isn't the same hit. I know bowlers who can trip the 4 pin all day, but when I hit at the same place, I leave it (for me the 6 pin). There is no right or wrong answer, just individuals accounts. I think the questionnaire is looking into that aspect of it. Nothing less, nothing more.

Bowlers are obviously too stupid to answer a simple survey and already making excuses why it may or may not strike.

There's plenty to be gained from the survey as it is, and more to be gained from replies on here.
