Could it Be This Simple?
« on: January 27, 2008, 06:25:24 AM »
Ok, so here is the deal.  I've been struggling getting a consistent release for several months.  My avg has dropped right at 5 pins.  Friday night, a guy two lanes down (who is a very good bowler) came down after the first game and told me that I'm throwing the ball relying to much on my fingers and that I'm not palming the ball up until the point of release.  He suggested that the ball was probably to loose in the thumb and it was starting to slip off of my hand prior to the release which was causing me to grab the ball at the bottom of my swing which was throwing everything off.  I did as he suggested and got a much better roll.  Here's the strange part, I think that I've been throwing the ball off the tip of my thumb since I started bowling 7 years ago, noone ever noticed what I was doing wrong and this guy just happened to see my hand at the foul line as he was walking back from his shot.  He told me the key to consistent roll and hand release is to almost palm the ball like a basket ball and use your entire hand to get the turn and roll on the ball.  Does this make sense to everyone?  Any input is really appreciated.  Thanks in advance

I have heard this idea before, but, for me personally,I disagree with it.I like the ball to sit on the ball of the index finger, not in the palm.I was always taught that is the strong side of the hand.

It makes perfect sense to me, and you can change the direction of the roll based on where you place the index and pinky fingers on the bowling ball.  I use that trick all the time, it's one of my key adjustments.

My old coach tried to get to hold the ball more in my palm but I kept going back to more on my index finger. The key is to be able to repeat shots time after time.

Help with what?  Did the change improve your bowling?  If so, what's the problem?

It took one small suggestion to get me from grabbing the ball in my swing to allowing a free release without grabbing it.  When I discovered it worked, I didn't seek the approval of the ballreviews committee before implementing the change.  The result: a 240.58 average over the last 4 weeks of league bowling.

Joe Firpo is a great example of a guy who palms the ball.  Beautiful armswing and release that I wish I had!  He wasn't exactly a national celebrity (he shot spares like a rookie sometimes), but he definitely had a great strike ball.

Stop awaiting approval and bowl!
