Tips on spare shooting - HELP PLEASE!!!
« on: January 05, 2007, 11:44:34 PM »
Talk about being in a funk.  Ever since Nationals last year my spare shooting has been terrible.  At Nationals, I missed a 7 pin and an 8 pin (right-handed bowler) that cost be some brackets.  This year I am so hit or miss on spares it's not funny.  Before Nationals I estimate I picked up 90-95% of my spares, this year I'm 50% at best.  The problem is mainly single pins on either side of the deck.  After Nationals I swore I would throw straight at single pins, but I get to the foul line and I can't decide to hook at the pin or throw it straight, and I usually miss.  My friend says I'm aiming the ball and should just let the ball work.  I built my average over the past five years on my ability to pick up spares, but this year it's costing me.  I should be in the 210+ area, but I'm only at 196 and 198.  I get so mad too that it frustrates me for the rest of the series, and I hate the fact that I drop a few choice words here and there.

Anyone have any thoughts, or suggestions for a book to read that may help?  Thanks.

With the helpful advice of several posters, I borrowed a white dot last night for right side spares.  Did not miss a single ten pin (6 or 7).  Only two opens, left the 8 from the 2-4-5-8 bucket and the 8 from the 2-8.  The straight shot at the ten pin worked great, and I hope it holds up.  The plastic ball I ordered from bowlingball.com should be here in time to use next week.  Thanks again for all the advice...

I posted the exact same question to Dr Eric Lasser top bowling psychologist. Helped me quite a bit. That is if its not just a plastic problem.

Garycubfan - saw something to this effect once before.  For me it's hard to do because my starting point for my first shot is the right-most dot.  Not much room right of there.  Also, I don't spot bowl, so its even more of a problem.  I 'feel' my way...I know, some will say that is not a good idea, but if I spent all my time thinking about one particular board or spot, I'd go nuts.  Thinking too much is typically what gets me into trouble in the first place!!
