Bowling with carpal tunnel?
« on: January 11, 2007, 10:57:48 AM »
Got a question for anyone.....

Lately, over the past month or so, I started having numbness in my pointer and middle fingers, but no real pain.... so I went to the doctor to see what was up and was told that it sounded like carpal tunnel. The only thing I can think of that I do is bowl, which I probably overdid a bit by bowling 4 leagues this season plus usually a day of open practice.

My question is...... does anyone here bowl with or know anyone who bowls with carpal tunnel? If so, are there any wrist supports or other devices they use to assist their bowling? What is good to use? What is not? I asked if it'd be better off to drop bowling completely for a while, but was told that it might be nice to cut back but stopping completely might not be necessary.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Having had both wrists operated on 10 years apart, I can safely say, better be careful! 2nd wrist I waited too long and 2 of the fingers are still numb after a year. This means the nerve will probably nerver grow all the way back.

1. rest is the ONLY cure.

2. take an anti-inflammatory to reduce the swelling. as the tendons get inflamed they get larger. As the get larger, since the tunnel is not expandable, the nerve gets smaller and gets squashed. This is why you get numbness, as far as I know, and some people get pain.

3. DO NOT aggravate it by continuing to do what ever caused it. There are many possible causes.

4. Get the nerve conduction test which is the ONLY true way to tell how bad it is, as far as I know. Pain or numbness are not good indicators of how much damage is actually being done.

5. There are no MAGIC cures.

get it checked and then get it snipped. Man what a relief!! I have both of mine done. Took only like 4 weeks until I could throw a ball, but I did the second one in the summer so I would not have to worry about the bowling end of things and I would be healed really well. But I had the operation at 7AM and was on the lake fishing by 11 AM that same morning......

As soon as the doc snipped that bridge in there I was oh wow..... RELIEF!!! instantanious....

I had the same problem a couple years ago. I also work on computers all day though to so it wasn't from bowling. I had mine done 2-3 years ago now and man, no pain ever in the wrist anymore. Before it got fixed my wrist, middle finger would hurt and my thumb would go numb by the end of the night bowling. Now nothing. I took a whole season off (doctor recommended it). It feels great now and my average went from a 190 to 210 now. IT helps having feeling in you hand well bowling.

I had carpel surgury on both wrists 5 years ago and its the best thing I could have ever done. I was getting to where my hands and fingers where numb during the daytime as well as night.. It was hard to bowl at times as well.. I had to use a wrist brace everytime I bowled due to the pain..

I would go get the test done (where they stick needles into your muscles, its not pleasent) to make sure carpel is what you have. It could be another issue all together..

Well anyway, I still have carpal tunnel syndrome in that hand, but now my symptoms are back as before ( I don't have much if any feeling in my fingers, and no dexterity, I can't handle any object smaller than a dime without fumbling around since I can't feel it ) and I still have occasional wrist pain with a mouse.  But its not bothering me to bowl at all anymore.

This is why I suggested getting the problem taken care of properly. I also waited too long to have surgery and while I still have some feeling in my thumb and index finger, it will never get back to normal. Not being able to pick up things is the start of serious problems.

I still VERY STRONGLY suggest that you, GoliathRuler, get medical problems taken care of by a doctor, not a bowling coach.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'm going to drop atleast one league and see how that leads me for a while, as well as going for the tests in a week.

I wear the ebonite magforce wrist support now as well as tape on my middle and ring fingers, so pain is almost non-existent, it's just a little funny feeling when you feel as if you have no feeling in the tips of your fingers.

oh yes - I agree entirely - I didn't mean for my post to imply otherwise

sorry.

I'm a little ... "off", not that I'm seeing that true feeling will never come back to these fingers. I'd rather no one get stuck in the position that I am in now that I delayed and delayed the operation. While they're not totally number, they'll never have peoper feeling again and it's annoying to almost dangerous that I can't pick up what used to be normal.
