ball doesn't react strongly today
« on: November 08, 2009, 12:09:15 PM »
I had some practice today and for some reason my ball wouldn't react strongly.

If I were to describe it, it's like my ball spent too much time in the roll phase and not enough time in the hook phase.

Would that mean my ball was rolling out?

If so how do I combat this and what surface adjustments could I make?

probably.
a. You move deeper and get it into the dry later, or
b. You throw it faster, or
c. You throw it with more axis rotation, or tilt, or
d. You use a ball with less surface.

A ball goes into the hook phase before the roll phase if i'm not mistaken. You probably mean your ball was skidding too much, so there might've been more oil out there than usual. If this continues, then I would put a rougher surface on the ball. If that doesn't work, an oil extraction may be needed.

Could have been carrydown, too.  If you went in after dozens of lines were thrown last night with no fresh oil today, all those plastic ball bowlers in cosmic bowling probably pushed the oil down to the pin deck.

Combine that with a lack of oil in the heads, promoting early reaction, and it may be no surprise you saw what you saw.

If the lanes had not been oiled then there is a good chance the heads are dried up and there is carrydown on the backend.

SO what will occur is that the ball will start burning energy in the heads and midlane. Then the ball will not have anything left on the backend of teh lane...and if there is carrydown, chances are the ball wont hook on the backend anyway.

To combat this move yourself like 10 baords left with your feet and your eyes and see what happens. Then try moving deeper or perhaps grab a weaker ball and move right.

Could also be that a more viscous oil was used. Even when the pattern is the same, it "feels" very different, and carrydown occurs more easily.

I forgot to mention that when I tried my plastic ball, it reacted better than my strike ball, but not enough to play my normal line.

I went to the lanes twice that day. Early in the morning and late at night.  Had the same problem in both times.

It was strange though.  My ball would make a move, but not enough to hit the pocket strongly.  If it were dry lanes like usual in my place, the ball would overhook and I''''d go brooklyn if I wasn''''t playing deeper, but this time I''''d have the opposite effect.

I see many here are mentioning carrydown.  How do I know if it was carrydown versus something like ball burning up or rollout?

How can I tell if my ball is burning up or rolling out?

Your situation is exactly what I described....you hit lane conditions where the normal shot is burned out.

The heads have gone away and the backends have carrydown.

About your only shot here is to play off the corner direct to the pocket unless you can find something inside.

Good luck.

Now that I think about it that makes sense. Thanks.
