How much time to "Reset"?
« on: October 14, 2003, 03:33:35 AM »
When you are in a slump, how long does it take to reset yourself?  Feels like to me that you wouldn't want to keep on bowling several days a week and keep your slump going.  Maybe a break from bowling?

What do you do to change things up when you're not at your best?

I usually take 7-9 days off from practice but bowl my 3 leagues during the week. During this time period not on the lanes, the 1 hour I would be practicing, I sit in a completely dark room in my house and play a cd I have with sounds of the ocean and visually picture my swing and think of positive things I have done in the past. Doing this helps me.

For me it depends on what I have been doing: bowling too much, too little or fooling around with too many balls or speeds & releases? Each cause has a different solution. I believe one has to determine the cause to determine the solution.

If I am totally lost, I take 3 balls: mild, medium, spare and go practice basics with the same release and speed, until I feel comfortable again. Comfort throwing and at the foul line, while posting every shot, is usually a good sign that mechanics are back in focus.

If it's a ball problem and I get confused, charting each ball's results, ball path, how it hits, how it deflects and the like on several oil patterns can usually point to what's wrong and what's needed.

If I am really desperate, I will arrange for substitutes for my leagues and take one or two weeks off and do nothing. Haven't had to do that for 3 or 4 years - thankfully.
