women's average question
« on: April 14, 2008, 11:39:39 AM »
What is a normal average for a woman who bowls in a mixed league?  I've bowled in two summer leagues and my average was around 140.

thanks!!

idk but my g/f and i bowl in a mixed league and she averages 175 im guessing it all depends on weight and how you throw either curve or backup ball

My wife has a 97 average and it's NO TAP. You're doing fine Hannah. Don't worry about your average. Just have fun and try to improve each week. Get some practice sessions in and maybe a coach if you feel that it will help.

Well, what is "normal"? Locally, some female bowlers with years of experience "only" have a 150 average, while the sport "cracks" easily have 180+ book averages. For a hobby bowler a 140 is IMHO not bad or nothing to feel weak about - it is the way it is, wonders do not happen over night, and there's always room for future improvements

If you hunt around, you can find stats on "average averages" for Joe and Jane Bowler.
But the most important thing is - are you enjoying yourself?

In our mixed league, the lowest average for a woman is around 100. The highest average for a woman is around 175. I think 140 is not bad, depending upon how long you have bowled, how much you bowl and how much you care about bowling.

Practice? Coach? Multiple leagues? Read these forums all the time?

Pay attention to Mumzie, ThongPrincess and other lady bowlers on here.

I am bowling in a mixed league every other Saturday and the average for all of the lady bowlers is about 140, and there are 2 ladies who are above 180.

Several years ago I had heard it was something like 140, but I can't recall the source.  The mixed leagues I bowl in are - Sunday low 70 and high 173 - Wednesday low 130 and high 200 - Monday Sport League low 159 high 189.

As Mumzie said, the most improtant thing is having fun.  Unfortunately as you persue a higher level, it can sometimes remove the fun part.

I think you are around the national average.  Maybe 10 pins or so low, but that's only one spare per game.

Most women bowlers I've seen in mixed leagues are there because their boyfriend or husband bowls.   They are just looking for something to do with their significant other.  If you are looking for something more then that, then there's always coaching.   But no matter how you look at it, increasing your skill takes more effort then presently put forth.  If you cannot do that, for whatever reason/s, then enjoy where you are and do the best you can.  Its a tremendous hardship for women to gain skill at anything once you are an adult, married, with job, with children, husband etc.......  Doesn't matter if its bowling, softball, violin lessons.  Your time is usually pretty scrounched.  Making room for more time/practice in any hobby/sport is difficult to nearly impossible for most adult women.

I'm not saying that men don't have time constraints as well.  Only that women view the improvement levels differently then men.  I think more men can bowl, let off some steam and be happy at averaging 150, drinking a few beers or sodas with no thoughts of getting much better, then women can.  I think most women, when they put their minds to getting better, find more road blocks from their lifestyles.  Men seem to accept their time limitations better then women.  Women tend to overdue and burn their candles at both ends.

Bottom line from my perspective of your post is that you wish you were higher average.  But not really sure how to get there.  Its going to take some coaching, and practice, time on the lanes in games (say 9-12= a week) where you just work on improving skills your coach as guided you on.  Aimlessly practicing is not productive.

Another jist that I got from your post is that if 140 is normal then you are good to go.  What if I suggested to you that 160 was normal?  Now what?  :-)

Time to get going GIRL!!

You haven't been playing long and if you only play once a week, I'd say you're doing pretty well.

I don't think you can really define an 'average score for a woman' as such as there are so many variables to take into consideration - lane conditions, time, practise, how long you've been playing, etc.

Your average will also increase the more you play and as you learn more, but I think you're doing fine. It took me a good few years to make it to the 150 barrier!

Just to give her another example.  Bowling should be fun  I currently average 227 in my mixed league the other guy on the team aves about 205.  The 3 women on our team all average in the 140s.  It is my wife, my mom, and a friend of the other guys.  We have a great time and I dont put any pressure when they bowl bad...My wife shot a 113 last night while my mom shot 3 160 games.  It is all about getting better any ways.  Handicapped leagues are about pins over average not how high your average is.  Its all about the fun and enjoying yourself.  I think a winter league would give her enough weeks to improve a lot and even if she doesn't she needs to not worry about it.
One thing I always keep in mind not matter how good you think you are there is always someone better.  I have been beaten by the best and worst of bowlers its just a game.

My wife has been bowling for 4 years in mixed league and started around a 113 average and ended last year with a 149 average, she decided she wanted to start to hook the ball this year and fell back to a 142 average, she was disappointed at first but I told her that it will take time and practice to learn the consitent release and hitting her mark.  She enjoys bowling and we are going to try to get her some lessons to help her improve.
Bowling should be a relief from stress not creating stress!
